GH2 INTRA GOP1 176M Hack = superb

Thanks. I found streamparser, got it to work, but have no idea how to interpret the numbers.

The hack was susccesfully applied looking at the max speed, but the shot itself is low detail/low light judging by the low average rate of 60M. Shoot some detail outside in daylight that will push the average bitrate up towards the max, then you'll see if the card you're using can cope.

thxs chenopup

i'm going for the hack tomorrow for a shoot next week. when i want to change a patch, how is it done? any instruction link around ? thanks

For a while I was stuck with Sage's 88mps patch, which I thought was amazing. My Patriot 32 gig lx class 10 couldn't seem to handle anything over 100mps until Driftwood's Terraquake and Aquamotion v2 came along. I'm still stunned that I am now shooting at over 100mpps and at gop1.

Took Terraquake out for a spin with my 14mm 2.5 mounted on the Gh2.

To be honest, it's hard to gauge how much improved it is over the 88mbps patch. I get the impression the resolution isn't much better. Maybe I should have used the Panny 20mm 1.7 instead.

But then again, I'm shooting as normally as I can (no whip pans, no shakey cam) and probably is not stressing the codec.

I am slightly alarmed that my 32 gig card is now only holding about 25 minutes worth of footage.

Until I get more cards, I am thinking maybe I should stick to 44-88 mbps for most of my work.

Will try out aquamotion v2 tomorrow.

Thanks, Vitaliy and Driftwood!

@berylium have you tried seaQuake? from what i understand, it runs at 176? think many people are not using because of lack of spanning. is this your reason or... torn between that and aquav2

My understanding is that seaquake demands the fastest cards available... the sandisk extremes, which I don't have.

That is why I didn't try it. Haven't done any shooting that is over 3 minutes so never ran into span issues.

I think terraquake was written for the slower class 10 cards. IQ might be visibly inferior to seaquake.... but I don't know.

I am lucky to have 2 gh2 bodies.... so I have Terraquake in one and Aqua 2 in the other. Will test aqua today.

Nice.
Even recompressed on youtube you can tell the shadow detail held up well. driftwoods latest GOP1 settings are amazing. Aquamotion v2 is also a great compromise 100mb/s setting that spans on SanDisk Extreme Pro 32GB 30MB/s SDHC.

anybody have problems loading the GH2 formatted sd card onto a mac? say for copying the hack firmware and for future transferring of video files?? I'm running parallels windows 7 as well; but, windows doesn't see the gh2 formatted card.

any suggestions?

This hack just uses too much card and hard drive for me...back to the 44Mb long GOP for me I'm afraid. Nice idea, just impractical.

For long form 44Mbps is ideal. But cards are getting cheaper and better all the time. The just-released Sandisk 195MBps SDXC cards are incredible, $199 for 64 GB is a great deal and it will only get cheaper! That gets you 53 minutes of the best quality the GH2 can produce. Good to have that capability anyway.

Car30 Analyse the average sizes on streamparser (or Elecard preferably) and INTRA patches beat all of them. If you prefer predicted frames then stick to GOP3. But frame to frame, field to field the INTRA is better.

If you're an event/documentary shooter, then I agree, but I'd still use CBrandon 66. Any narrative/controlled work though, I'd still recommend Intra, as there's just so much more to love about it. An hours worth of footage recorded for about £100-150. I think that's pretty compelling.

Sure. It is compelling. I'd like to see more narrative work done like this. Really, however, this would be entirely relevant if we were shooting with Cinema projection in mind. I really admired Gareth Edward's film "Monsters" for example, that was shot on an EX3 with a Letus adapter and Nikon primes. It has had a big cinema release and is an 8 bit long gop 4:2:0 1080p shot movie, much like the GH2, stock. I'd love to replicate this kind of thing - inspirational to say the least! I, like others, would love to believe that massive cinema release is my destiny with the GH2. Sadly, however, it's not, and Vimeo is still the most likely theatre for my work. If I make a short film, it may do the festival runs, as some of my films have, but eventually, it's Vimeo, and who cares about Intra on Vimeo? Certainly not Vimeo themselves! Do the festival audience care? No- they just want a film that doesn't suck as bad as the last awful short that was on, whatever it looks like. Do distributors care? Not really. Why? Because they're not nerdy geeks like us, pixel peeping and obsessing in this very male obsessive way. Most Producers I meet these days are women anyway, and mostly couldn't give a stuff (and rightly so) what the picture looks like if they are entertained by the film is some way. Don't get me wrong - I am still a pixel peeping geek, but I am in recovery these days.... ;)

Lucas. I agree with most of what you say. The relative merit in terms of audience engagement between short GOP and long GOP is going to be low. Although I would argue that the cleaner the photography, the more more credibility we can carry. Also, it will grade better.

But, I just don't think the short GOP trade offs are that bad. I would first ask "why not?" INTRA, not the other way around. The only 2 reasons I can think why not, is 1, the need to shoot longer takes than 4-5 minutes. 2, is cost of memory cards. Both in regards to narrative film making are not really much of a problem.

The vast majority of takes will be under 4 minutes, unless I'm reenacting Atonement. 64GB or an hours worth of storge should be enough for most day shoots, assuming shooting narrative like film. If I'm letting the cameras roll and roll, I'm making life hard for myself in the long run.

so now, after a lot of testing and footage done with the top patches,
are there any conclusions on how to minimize the shitty 8-bit color banding except avoiding on shoot??
(the only real barrier between GH2 and pro cameras)
i mean, once you see it, especially on the last patches, it's.... it's a crime, really :kali:
so, for the last time: there is NO WAY this codec could be improved from what it is, with any genius hack, right?
that's an unbreakable wall?
shiiiiiiiiieeeeeeeeeeeet (the wire style)

I need to shoot interviews so I need spanning and longer shoot times on a 32mb card. I hear that once you get to 44M the improvement is negligible. Is that true? Also, is there a 44M Hack that is also INTRA and GOP1?

Every editor knows that intra is primo. Why are we even debating intra vs long gop? seriously, i have in my possession 64GB p2 card worth 600+ compare that to a sandisk that hits 199 for the same storage that's a days worth of footage or half-day where you shoot your load go to lunch with crew, save the files, format and continue on to shot another 64GB. if this card is not for you and you don't care about intra frames then ok, but for me I would love to have and do have intra with forthcoming 64GB spanning, grading will be easier, editing shots and insertion effects will be better and overall i know each frame is what I saw.
