Into the Wilderness

Hi All,

I am getting ready for a 10 shot on the Colorado/Snake River in the Grand Canyon. I am wondering in anyone has done wilderness type shoots like this and how did they prepare?

I have limited space (we will be traveling on pontoon rafts), limited power, and extreme weather, (river, rain and dessert)

Even if you haven't run a trip like this, if you know of someone who has or a resource I can tap I would be extremely grateful.

Thanks all,
Octavio

Planned Equipment...
EX1
2 Evolution G2 wirless kits
Shotgun
48 gigs of SXS cards
Wide angle adapter

I would bring plenty of camera cleaning supplies (lens cleaner). Nothing worse than a dirty lens on landscapes. A soft brush for brushing off the dust you will get there. And maybe a white hand towel you can put on top of camera when the sun is blazing on it. And be aware that the weather there can change in a flash and it can be 96 degrees at top of canyon and 40 degrees at bottom.
I would also just buy a camera weather cover and plenty of trash bags to cover stuff when needed. I would also have any setting that you have made written down on a piece of paper in case you have to preform a reset on camera and you loose all your PP settings. Bring a french flag if no matte box for lens. And one hard wire lav for when your G2's break down...maybe a mono pod as well? And a empty small canvas bag, you can fill with sand and use as a camera resting pad for low stuff. If your doing interviews maybe a flexfill. And something to help with the LCD screen, sun hood, or bring some Black wrap.
Also a polarizer filter would be a must. Maybe a sunset grad would be nice and some ND grads would help as well.
And tie all your cases together with a sash so when the raft flips all your stuff stays together. So you wont loose that one small case or whatever. Just think of the little stuff that will screw you if you lose or break one, or didn't pack.

And if they have to rescue you down in the canyon and Care Flight you out they will charge you for every bit. They do so many rescues!

Be safe, and don't get careless out there.

more sxs.

48gb is only around 3 hours of hq1080/24p. to save cash and space, get a MxM express adapter and a buttload of 16gb sd cards. then get a pelican waterproof case for your sd cards and you'll be prepared to shoot for a long time without dumping. just keep in mind that if you are doing any slo-mo you will be limited to around 48fps. but then you can always use your real sxs cards for slo-mo.

I didn't see anyone else mention in but I hope you are insured against accidental damage/ theft etc. It gives me the quivers to think of that camera on a raft in the middle of a rough river. It cost me < $ 100 to add it as a scheduled item (no deductible) to my homeowner's insurance and is certainly worth the peace of mind. Good luck on your trip.

Can you imagine the day when someone at Sony spotted the postings about all the adapters and cards that done the job of the SxS?

A whole lot of hair pulling must have ensued. lol

Goes to show you though that if you
- introduce a product
- try to be elitist and block third party accessories
- charge ridiculous prices for those accessories

then someone will come along and find a way to bypass that.

Hi Eire,

My producer is adding it to her policy even as we speak. Bonus, I get coverage for a full year. :)

Thanks,
O

Hey, make sure you come back with a full report on the trip! Then you can share with us what you wished you had and things you didn't need, etc. I plan on a lot of these kinds of adventures.
