internet

Re: internet

A good deal of cable connections are from 3Mb up to 5Mb from what I've seen. DSL is anywhere from 256k to 768k I believe.

Everyone I personally know use cable.

Re: internet

could you imagine an actual constant download of 3000 kbps. With Cable the more people on the slower it'll go. I've never seen a download over 200 kbps with cable or dsl in Canada or any time that i've used the net in the States.

Re: internet

cheers. I was just wondering because there are still a fair amount of people in the UK with a 56kbs connection. Most people now have a broadband dls connection with 512kbs being the average id guess, unless your a university, government building, importnat building or have a lot of money etc which have a T1 connection.

I personally have a 1mb connection which does me fine. I get on average 120kbs download speed.

Re: internet

2800 k-bytes per second? As in, nearly three megabytes?

Sheesh. My cable maxxes out at usually around 60kb/sec.

Re: internet

Well, I just ran a test, and it was 2013. Must be a lot of people on -- or I did all my previous tests at 3:00 in the morning.

Re: internet

Well, there is a difference between line speed and d/l speed. I think the speed tests try to serve individual 'clients' for the purpose of the test. During actual d/l we compete with everyone on the server for data.

My first web connection was 1200 baud (1.2kb/s??) back in '93. Until last summer dial-up was my only option for this rural area. Thankfully my new wireless (2.9mb/s down, 1.8mb/s up) allows me access to a considerable amount of content in this site that would otherwise be lost.

Yup, because most users are pulling content and don't need high upload speeds.

The ISPs really hit hard for those of us that need u/l speed. Typically businesses need this so they don't care as much.

Re: internet

At home on cable, almost 500 kb/sec down. Here at the office on a T1 (I think), I just clocked 5291.8 kbps.

Re: internet

yeah on a test mine will say around 2000kbps but if you look at the little ticker when your downloading a file it never goes over 200kbps

Re: internet

Are you sure your not just getting kbps and KB/sec mixed up? Because most online test will give you your score in kbps and the windows download prompt shows you your speed in KB/sec, and that would explain why your "actual" speed is one naught shorter than the test speed, because they are using different units.
