Internet speed?

So I'm getting ready to move, so I'm looking to get a new internet connection where I'm going.

Now, from the looks of it, the highest speeds in the area are 5Mbps. But where I am right now I'm getting 11Mbps. What is it that could constitute HALF the speed?

Right now I have a Comcast cable connection, down there my choices are Road Runner and SBC.

Anyone have any insight?

Whats your Upload kbps rate?

Try http://www.broadbandreports.com you can find out service providers and speed/reliability information based on a location. You can also go into the forum for a specific provider and read comments from people using the service in that area.

Might help you find out what's available and how well it works, etc, etc.

TC if you're switching to road runner or sbc those are DSL, right? ADSL and SDSL have different up/download rates, so that could have some factor depending on what you'll have. I've always found cable to be faster than DSL anyways. DSL also relies on your physical distance from the hub or connect point to determine your real speed.

sidenote:
According to numion i'm at about 10mb/sec

I'm on Cox cable

Road Runner is cable, and it looks like that's probably what I'll be doing.

That wasn't coming down on you, MC! That was offering you the prize for the best newcomer! You haven't been with us all that long, but I'm liking your posts, and saying what you said to TC and blackhawk is, well, heck -- it shows you're fitting in here just fine! :)

About three years ago I used to pay $99 for 128kbps ADSL with a 2GB (yes, TWO) download bandwith limit (+ something like $10 per 100MB above that). That was the first DSL ISP in town. Cable was even more expensive, like $300 per month at the very least, but with more GBs included.
Currently I'm at 256kbps with the same ISP, for $25 a month - the only plan with unlimited bandwith. There are higher speeds of up to 7mbps available now, but the price is hard to justify (tried it, ended up at ~$120 at the end of the month; limit sucks). Cable is still freakin expensive...

What I'm trying to say is... I'm with MC

xl70e3- this is off the topic...but are you really in Russia? I have always wanted to go there and right now my GF and I are trying to plan a really unconventional trip next year.

I tested my connection on numion and it says 808kbps... so that is LESS then 1Mbps right... I know, but I'm just sitting here in amazement. I've ran it a couple times. I am running a 54g router... is that slowing me down THAT much?

Oh and I'm paying $52.99 to Charter High Speed for 3Mbps.

I have waited one year for an internet connection (there was no line:kabel, telephone, microwave), then I got something like a mobile telephone but it was not a handy, it was given by the kabeltelephone firm... so I could reach the internet with 1K, but never used it) after 1.5 year I got a normal telephone line so I could connect to the internet with 56K modem, then 1.5 half year ago, I wanted to change to ADSL and now finally I could. now (from decembre) I have an 512K net connection without time limit.
