FS7: Internal ProRes Banding using XDCA

My clients are having great success with ProRes from the XDCA for exteriors, interiors, green screen. Sounds like you have need to have your XDCA looked at.

No noise of any kind. It's such a passive box, I can't imagine what that noise you are hearing could be. Gotta be a malfunction in the junction. Contact Sony.

You say you were in Saudia, and as you sure know now it's plus 125 degrees F here, that could easily turn fan noise up more likely than having a defective XDCA. It is quite above the actual operating temp. of the camera after all, extremist it can gets, especially in desert sand too.

I'd look into this first.

It makes the same noise in my back garden in wet and windy England as it did out in the desert heat.

Perhaps some sand and heat clogged things up? do you remember if it was as noisy before the trip? In either way (a lemon or sand) it should be an easy Sony fix.

Just throwing it out there.

Is the FW up to date on the extension? Since the extension and the camera need separate FW updates are they both on the latest version?

I had the unit for two hours before heading to the airport. I switched it on and it made the exact same noise it does now. I noticed the banding with the internal ProRes recording the first time I activated that function. I've inspected the unit and it's clean. Hope you're right about it being an easy fix.

Just wanted to add to the tally that my XDCA doesn't make noise like you're describing either. At times I have noticed when the fan kicks on because the camera is on my shoulder and my ear is close to the fan on the unit, but otherwise it's practically inaudible. I'd put my vote that the issue is with a defective unit. I also haven't noticed the banding in the ProRes that you've described.

In relation to the Odyssey HFR footage, I too noticed the noise in the shadows with the ungraded s-log and at first glace was pretty concerned. However, when an LUT was applied/the shot was graded, it seemed to get rid of the noise easily.

I'll throw in another voice that my XDCA is quiet. I can hear a little bit of quiet fan whirring if I ear is close to the back/underside of the FS7, but any farther away than a few inches it's silent.
