FS7: internal microphone settings

The internal microphone sometimes is useful. But in windy Netherlands the wind-noise is always a problem.

What are your settings for the internal microphone?

I tried to put some dead cat fabric on the microphone hole, but that didn't work. Any other solutions for this?

No other ideas for the internal mic. I don't really trust it, even for it's intended purpose, which is to apparently capture a little sound to synch to and for the cam operator to talk into, for verbal notes, I guess. If I were to want something like a mic to talk into myself, I think I'd use one of the XLR inputs and just wire myself a lapel mic, or even go with a wireless transmitter on myself and a receiver plugged into one of the XLRs. If you're trying to capture audio for use with your video, I would definitely not be using that tiny little mic. In that case, just get a decent little shotgun for about $300. You can fit a kitten-mitten over a shotgun mic with no problems, and they do work, just don't expect any miracles. If in very windy (especially gusty) conditions, I always get some ruffling sound in my audio. Not all dead cats are created equal, but that would be a topic for another thread. Sorry not much help, just wanted to point out the part about the internal mic's function, and not to expect too much from it.

Hi thanks for your answer, I do use two external microphones, rode videomic pro and rode ntg3 both bolted to the camera, so that is not the problem. But the internal microphone is always noisy, I think the construction is the problem and maybe it is solvable with some dead-animal sticker or something.
Of course I can set the microphone low, but I just wondered if there was some tweak to do this.
Now the internal mic is rather useless. Only use it to mumble into the camera when I want to make an 'audionote'.

I think what Mark is trying to say is that the internal mic is always going to perform poorly no matter what you do. So why waste time thinking about it or looking for a fix? There isn't a fix. No matter how much you polish a turd it is still a turd. Just use your external mics and forget about the internal if it doesn't meet your needs.

I tried dead cat stuff as well but wound up putting a piece of felt over the mic hole. Seems to work fine. But remembering that mic is the same one that comes with most DSLR's, it's pretty much just basic ambient mic. You would be better served getting real camera mic and using one of your inputs.

I would suggest turning it off in the audio menu a less sticky solution. :Drogar-BigGrin(DBG)

Not sure that's wise as it is at least getting reference audio for syncing when necessary and it is useful got just basic ambient. Not going to get A-game audio for sure but it's there, might as well used it; and since it's ch's 3+4, not much chance of it being used accidentally as primary audio, which is my fear when I use a lav and camera mic combo.
