Intermittent Audio Recording issue

I have a DVX100p whch has only 45 hours on it. It's been in the closet for years and I'm hoping to sell it.
The audio records intermittently both inputs and the internal mic. I ran the tape cleaner for 10 sec twice and used two new tapes ( Sony and Maxell ) whch may also be a few years old. What's the next step - buy a specific Panasonic tape and try again - or somehow clean the heads ?
Does anyone have a link to how I can carefully clean the heads myself using some sort of spray or solvent ?

The only part I don't understand in the head cleaning instructions is this statement
"*The cylinder must be cleaned in a horizontal motion. *Cleaning with a vertical motion greatly increases the chances of damaging the heads."
