Intermittent Audio Playback?

My DVX appears to be reliably recording sound just fine, but when I rewind the tape to play back, I get nothing in the headphones, and no VU bars on the viewfinder. A second or third try, though, yields playback and bars.

Is this likely a settings-type issue or is my DVX broke...?
