intermediary codecs and such.......

so as newer versions of vegas become available (like vegas 9) will there still be the need for intermediary codecs for most HD formats?

i noticed that in the Vegas 9 thread it is stated that 'Vegas Pro 9 can efficiently edit and process DV, AVCHD, HDV, SD/HD-SDI, and all XDCAM™ formats in real time,'.......

so what does that mean? no need for raylight? cineform?

will they only be needed to edit dvcpro HD footage (ex. p2 card footage)?

when someone says that a certain type of footage can be edited "natively" does that mean there is no need for a codec?

i know the questions are a bit noobish... and that there are many threads regarding this issue....

but please... bear with me... im really looking for answers in simple english....

thanks in advance....

I think this depends on your workflow and what you are doing with your footage.

I got Neo Scene when I still used CS3 to edit my AVCHD files from my 150 then about 1 week later I moved away from Premiere to Vegas 8.0c.

If I'm doing something quick and easy then I'll just use my MTS files off of the card from my 150 but if I know I'm going to use more effects then I'll transcode to a Neo AVI.

So while I could use Vegas without transcoding AVCHD, I still find it useful to have Neo Scene.

I like AVCHD a hell of a lot but I think editing it is not right.
I don't know if it was made to be heavily edited.

OK. So you can edit the footage on the timeline.... but the play back is insanely slow when putting effects and things unless you use the codec to convert the files to AVI to begin with...

..i understand.

have you ever tried editing other formats from other cameras by chance?

You will still need Raylight to work with P2. The only DVCPRO HD "support" is the ability to ingest it from a deck and convert it to an MPEG-2 format.

Editing "natively" typically means that the footage will not have to be converted to another format first.

I have not.

Anything I shoot with my FX-1 goes right into Neo Scene so I have never used any native HDV video with Vegas.

I only have the FX-1 and my 150 so HDV and AVCHD are the only video formats I've ever worked with.

I do have a old Sony Digital 8 but I have not used that in years.

I've edited all kinds of formats with Vegas. Yes, you still need Raylight if you're dealing with DVCProHD, but most other formats drop right in. Playback speed is a function of machine power more than anything else.
