interface for live streaming video

Hi Looking to live stream HD video from a Panasonic AG AC90 using HDMI to a Mac book Pro Laptop (running Mavericks OSX 10.9) via thunderbolt (it does NOT have USB3) to Youtube/favcbook et al.
I have OBS and FCPX but expect to need additional SW.

Originally I had thought to use a Blackmagic Design Intensity Shuttle for Thunderbolt https://www.eastwoodsoundandvision.com/blackmagic-design-intensity-shuttle-for-thunderbolt however some now suggested a simpler and less expensive Blackmagic Design UltraStudio Mini Recorder. https://www.eastwoodsoundandvision.com/blackmagic-design-ultrastudio-mini-recorder

Does any one have any experience that would suggest one is more preferable than the other?

Can anyone suggest any better/similar interfaces

For less potential headaches you could opt to use a hardware solution like for instance the Vidiu or Livestream products.

What potential problems with the black magic units?

Which Vidu or Livesteam units were you thinning of?
The Vidu and Livestream unit I could find had no thunderbolt (not to mention were a to more expensive) .

If you want to stream through a PC then that is your choice, all I am saying is that there are simpler alternatives with less components to worry about.

The brief was streaming though a MAC.

The reason being I can add titles (station identifiers ) and other things to the stream. If I can do that with the (somewhat more expensive) options you suggest it might be worth looking at.

However the mac in the middle means the director can monitor the stream. To monitor the stream with the vide or lifestream also seems to require a PC or MAC so I am back where I started without the option to add titles.

I've also been looking at doing the same and so far the SlingStudio is really looking great.
It's a far simpler solution and uses an iPad for controlling camera switching.

It may be a bit less able than a full BMD setup but it's also far easier to implement.

Sounds like you might be using a 2011 MBP.
I've used Blackmagic UltraStudio Mini Recorders and Telestream Wirecast. OBS should work though.
I do think you should update your OS to El Capitan or Sierra.
Given the age of the laptop you may push the CPU very heard. If OBS supports Intel QuickSync encoding use that to lower CPU resources. I know Wirecast supports that.
Personally if you can afford to, upgrade to a late 2013 15" MBP. It's a big difference. It's what I use now. I use two two Mini Recorders and sometime add a third camera using Magewell HDMI to USB3 device.

I just got done streaming the west regionals of the Little League World Series.
I used a 2013 Macbook Pro (got a great deal on eBay for $800 for a refurbished,
like new, unit with warranty). I used 2 Black Magic Ultra Studio Mini recorders.
I had an issue at first for some reason, getting both cameras to show up. But
after a restart and download of the newest drivers, it started working and I never
had any other issues for the rest of the week. I also used a HDMI to USB 3 capture
card to add a third camera. This was using Wirecast, but OBS should work the same
way in general. I'l have a blog post more about this adventure soon, as it was a lot
of new stuff for me to learn. For example, at the state championships, I had no power
available to me, and no internet. As usual, it seems half of doing video work, is 'MacGyvering'
solutions out of what you can find.

As was mentioned, I think the 2013 is the oldest one I'd try to do something on if you
really want to have multicam. You get the quad core i7, SSD drive, 2 thunderbolt ports,
2 HDMI 3 ports, and an integrated AND a discrete GPU. I was streaming live plus recording
a local H.264 version to my harddrive and I was usually in the 20-40% use on my CPU.
Wasn't even breaking a sweat.
