*Interesting Stat*

More than twice as many people as the previous record:

What happened on August 20th? (I'm assuming it was delayed-traffic for the C500/FX9.)

hmmm ... interesting indeed. I wonder how reliable this stat is? Any moderator wish to share / guess ?
I try to check in regularly to the site... but I also sometimes feel that there are only about 100 - 250 "regular" peeps that post.

It's not a great metric, but not horribly outside of reality either. Some devices may connect with multiple threads until one returns a reply, then the others are dropped. They all count on that counter.

Example of this is our Shoutcast server for our radio station. Android and PC clients connect with a single count. Apple clients connect with up to 8 counts until one responds and then the current count drops back down to real numbers. Not sure if Apple does the web pages the same way, but I expect they do.

My only curiosity is what triggered it in August (if anything).

I don't really care about the validity (although it's indeed questionable), but I'm curious why there was a spike after no substantial increase in activity for 8 years. There were a lot of worthy announcements/topics during that time.

Not like it matters, but was a bit taken back to see this change, which I hadn't notice for more than a month (unless this was just recently updated) until today when I was at the bottom of the home page.

Well, this Red situation as apparently helped spike traffic on the forum to most users online ever - ~22,000 yesterday, beating the previous record set in 2011.
The BM 6K probably helped some too.

How many of you guys actually use RED cameras? My friend and I joke about buying one but never used one. I've seen several companies show one in promo pics on their site but not actually own one. It seems some clients have heard of them and somehow there is an (un)spoken reputation that if you use RED cameras you are big time. Not saying I agree with it or not, but some believe so.

Yeah I noticed this also the day after it happened. Interesting. Not sure why. Maybe combo of RED fiasco, BMD 6K, C500? It was yet a little early for when the FX9 talk really caught fire.

It seems there are a few more people on here again discussing the last few weeks. More than the usual small group. Anyone else notice? I've always liked this board and glad to see more activity.

Wonder what the record was back in 2011? I remember anxiously reading about the AG AC130/160 and HPX 250 wanting to buy a couple... and the autofocus fiasco. And 2011 was shortly after "everyone" become a video person in the DSLR revolution.

Less than 1% are members. Right now, at the bottom of the home page, it says:

Currently Active Users: 19673 (68 members and 19605 guests)

So it counts visitors who are not signed in.

I think that most of them are not even human, some kind of bots, a few search-engine indexers but mostly attackers from around the world. Any public website will get these. My personal website, to which I post an article once a decade, gets hit several times an hour. I imagine cnn.com gets several tries a second.

Yea, there was a thread about this once on REDuser (regarding that site) who currently has over 32K guests (1385 members).

At some point over the years, I believe there were over 100K guests.

A friend and I wrote a few pieces for a sports site that we thought had no more than average prospects and were greatly surprised when it kept expanding and claiming all sort of traffic. Without specific knowledge to prove our assertion, we still believe that the site owner paid for these bots.

Don't need to pay for bots, simple enough to download them and set them free to inflate your stats.

Most sites specify the search engine bots, but not seeing google listed in the current users.

I was trying to look up something on Yandex last night but wasn't sure about the exact name, so I kept changing the word sequence and/or the word spelling. After three tries in quick succession, Yandex gave me, "sorry, you're a robot" message. It's like I am in Kraftwerk or somefin.
