Interesting New Tech by Adobe for SLR Video

Nothing new here, that's how Red already records - RAW.

Well yes and no.

It's not new because this was announced well over a year ago. Don't get bogged down in RAW, that's only the tip of the iceberg. What is new is that products will be shipping soon that take advantage of the format from the point of origination, which unlike Redcode, already has a wide variety of camera and post hardware and software manufacturers signed on to support the standard.

Meaning, with the Adobe DNG format you could theoretically have multiple camera makes/models on set shooting to the same file format with a *standard* metadata header - including TC, CDL/LUT, Camera/Lens data etc. You could be shooting with a Panavision, Silicon Imaging, Weisscam, and ARRI camera simultaneously and deliver the same easy to read (and work with) file formats to a single Iridas Speedgrade for on-set look management, and use one simple utility to create all your dailies, and have all your original camera data plug in seamlessly into Avid or FCP on the same timeline, without transcoding if both NLEs support the format.

And because the format is OPEN, it means anyone with the desire can start developing for it. Powerful, easy, and with broad support among the major players, Adobe DNG is cool beans.

Are you kidding? Sorry but you have no idea of what you talking about here, RAW is supposed to be RED's main claim to fame. What supposedly makes them unique, sets them apart. I already predicted here many times that other camera companies will be coming out with VDSLR's with similar codecs to compete directly with RED and now this. Only one person in the whole wide world is not the only one able to develop a motion pictures RAW codec. So heavy duty competition is around the corner. Especially if Adobe gets involved this way. That is great news for all of us once again.

Do we really need another adobe product?

I would take every single product that Adobe would produce if it makes my work better and easier. It has already some of the best image products in the whole world. Keep them coming Adobe.

This is pretty big news. Open source RAW means canon, pana and others now have a doorway into the video RAW arena without having to partner with cineform.

Do you really think that it was lack of Open Source RAW that was preventing these companies from making cameras that shoot RAW!!! If they wanted to provide user with RAW recordings, they would've easily done it with their own format.

I think it's the competition with Red that will make them to move towards RAW.

This is pretty interesting news for the future (I don't know when it will start shipping in an actual camera), but as someone said earlier: what has this got to do with the GH1? Is it something which could be retrospectively applied to a camera through firmware? And even if it could, would Panasonic make such a firmware upgrade for the GH1 -- it might be a 2-year old camera by then...

You don't know what you're talking about !!

YOU WANT TO STEP OUTSIDE ??

By STEPPING OUTSIDE, do you mean taking this argument to a Vimeo pushup contest? (No After Effects or video looping allowed as expected)

You are probably just mad you clicked on that linked site and it wasn't even a live site.
