Interesting Color Correction - Performance Cut

THis is the performance cut of the False Image music video I was working on. I had a post earlier about this. Here's the video in QT. I didn't know what settings ya'll would like to see for the file, but I used these settings. The title of the song is "A Sadder Day in September". From my experience people either hate it or love the song. I like it a lot.

Shot: 2xDVX100
Lighting: Outdoors
Timeframe: 3 hours shooting, 6 hours post
Why: Final school project reeditted.
Edited in: Avid Xpress Pro 5
Pickle Studios Title was done in AE.

I'd love some feedback. Tear it up. BTW this is my first one and there was no budget whatsoever. I did this as a final project for my media production class, and the band didn't pay me.

I'm impressed. That's a really nice video and some talented musicians. The grabs you posted a few days ago caused concern, but it looks like there was no reason to be concerned. The white skies actually work well because it makes you focus more on the band. The color correction is heavy but that's a great effect. It looks great! I also like the black & white at the beginning and end. Nice open and close. Overall a great video. The band should be proud and so should you.

edit: After 2nd viewing, the only things I would change are at the very beginning. Remove the duo-tone (blue sky). Also, one shot has grey skies, but the previous shot had white skies. Doesn't flow well.

You guys are very talented for such a young band. The song reminds me of Greenday. Seems like all the elements of a good song are there. The audio levels were a little high from time to time, especially at the beginning, but I think that was intentional? If I were you I'd send this in to some agencies and see what happens. You might have a chance to get signed. You guys sound great together. Let’s hope puberty is kind to your voices :) I really liked the video guys. The edit was good too. Did you guys get to this point as a band by yourselves?

I agree with PK. The beginning needs to be more subtle. Seems like there are 5 or 6 different effects and it makes it look totally armature. What I would do is make it black and white and adjust the gamma settings to make it even darker. This one look will transition much better into your main video with the super tweaked contrast shots. I really like how the green shirt with the lightning bolt pops (stands out). So the only other thing I would have done is made sure each band member had another really vivid color on. Yellow, red, blue, green etc... It might be kind of cheesy if you each had a different logo on the front though. You'd look like the power rangers. Good luck!

Nice work. You guys have a lot of talent for your age all though im not into the "pop-punk" im more of a Bad Brains / Minor Threat person the band is tight and give them lots of credit for writing their own material. If thats an original Gibson(not epiphone) SG I dont know if I would have dropped it on the ground like that at the end :). The video was cool too especially being a one location shoot it never really got boring and held my attention the whole way through! Keep it up. I wish I had this technology when I was your age.

I'm not actually in the band but I'll forward the comments. They'll appreciate that. They've been offered to be signed many times but they don't want to quite yet because of the complications of being pre-16. They'll get signed after they all turn 16. Great guys. I'm just the music video director. Thanks for the commentary, I still have to add the part of the video which is in many locations. I'm going to do need a Glide cam or something, but it's not really in my budget to buy one just yet. Tryin to find someone who has one. I think I agree, there's a lot of color correction consistency and effect that I need to fix in the beginning. The black and white isn't consistent with the shot where all the colors change all of a sudden. I gotta figure out how to make it look better. I think I wanna keep the blue sky with the black and white shot, but I need to make it less subtle. The band members are all freshman/sophmores in highschool. I'm a senior this year and I'll be graduating in...well a year today. What's the best way to distribute a music video?

Nice job Secretpickle.

This video works well and as mentioned above; with one location it still held my interest. If you're adding more to it even the better. I'm torn on the Black and White personally; very cliche but do love the oversaturated coloring you use later into the piece.

This band is kick ass. I'm impressed. 15? My god; that's cool. Good song.

pretty good

pretty good

My only nitpick about the editing, which hasn't already been mentioned, is that the drummer is out of sync with the audio. To my mind, that's who you sync to, followed by the lead singer.

The band is good enough that they'll be kissing girls before you know it.

great color correction, the turquoise and green shirt come out banging, the other band members should have used some colored shirts too, but then like someone said theyll look like the power rangers...
anyways, go with your feelings. Keep on shooting more music video and by the time you're out of school you'll have a better portfolio than most kids out of filmschool.
.... and if you're going to stick with the B&W make it more contrasty, it will blend in better with the rest of the stuff.
and IMO it doesnt need anymore scenes. This is nice and simple as it is, and not boring at all.
