working as an actor for some time this summer. I would like to know what the best choice would be for me as I don't know how the "talent" side of the industry works as much as I do the production part. I had taken a few classes back in high school, but that was 2 years ago. Should I take an acting class first? Where to after that? Agencies etc? If anyone has a link that has info or would like to better inform me of this I'd greatly appreciate it.

Thanks again,
Reuben

Rubin, take a look at the Backstage.com forums. The New Actor and Working Actor threads will give you lots of info to digest. Yes, take acting classes first. Don't even think about agencies without some experience and lots of classes. Any agent that would take you on without any of those requirements would not get you any work anyway.

thank you for the response! And yea, I will probably take a class this fall and see how I like it, and of course I wouldn't jump on an agency right off the bat without knowing what I'm doing :) just wanted a shove in the right direction. thanks again, any other input would be greatly appreciated as well.

Hi Reuben, what are your goals? Are you looking to just be on sets? Or are you looking to get into something more serious? It really depends on what you're looking to do.

for now I am looking for whatever I can, but I wouldn't mind being some badass movie star someday.. but then again, who doesn't? :P
I am on sets enough as it is, usually working behind camera and haven't done any "acting" since high school. so yea, probably something more serious.

Community theatre isn't only a great way to get some stage experience and some exposure but it's also the best way to meet people to collaborate with. I would suggest getting involved in many stage plays as possible because once you learn to act for stage acting for film is a snap. Short form improv is also a great way to get out of your shell a bit and discover your strength's and weaknesses. If you can take a class or even just go to an Improv show you can see if it's something you want to do.

If you're in the LA area you should check out the TVI actor's studio, Stella Adler School, Second City Improv or even some classes at the UCLA extension. Best of all, experienced actors love helping young actors, if you can find a good mentor chances are he or she can help you with finding a good agent or manager once you have some credits under your belt.

My advice is to never turn down an opportunity to act, even if it's a POS student film, do it for the experience. You'll learn something every time.
