Interchangeable 2/3" with 35mm Sony HD cam

LuckyStudio 13

The Tapeless One
So the giants have awaken from their sleep, thanks to Red. Granted many of us cannot afford this camera but I believe this is a good sign where Sony and the other manufacturers are starting to change their business model. Sony hater or <insert your brand> lovers/haters, at the end we as the consumer wins as companies keep on evolving and improving their products for us.

This refers to the SOny SRW-9000 cam that was released during NAB 09.

Wow.

Very interesting. Sony has decided to cut the crap, roll up its sleeves, and actually COMPETE in the high end. This shows what I perceive to be a few fundamental shifts in the way Sony has approached the market -- and it's great news.

Now, of course it has very little applicability to the vast majority of DVXUsers; we're talking about the SRW9000 and above here, but...

... well, I think LuckyStudio 13 called it exactly right. Jim Jannard should take full credit for this. Sony's basically introducing their own version of "Obsolescence Obsolete", offering the SRW9000 with the 2/3" chip or the ability to interchange it to a 35mm-sized sensor, with a marketing slogan of "one camera for life" -- which is pretty much diametrically opposed to their prior attitude of offering a new camera every minute. They made specific appeals to rental houses and production companies that they understand you're spending a lot and you want to have confidence that it'll stay current for a long time, and hopefully let you earn your money back.

They also slashed the tape price by 40%, and they introduced their own ultra-SxS memory that stores a terabyte and runs at 5 gigabytes per second, and they introduced a lower bitrate (220mbps).

The high end is gonna be a crowded market real soon, with the introduction of the Epic, the Arri line, and now the SRW9000 all duking it out for that top-dollar segment.

This is really amazing news. All credit should go to Jannard for waking up these billion-dollar sleeping giants. Looks like this camera will be a direct competitor to the new modular Reds. I wonder how much the SRW9000 will be?

Also, glad to see that it's CCD and not CMOS! :)

Solid Improvements, but I expected a more radical announcement. Unfortunately, I don't think the infrastructure at Sony, Pana, etc can handle what their up against in the next 5 years.

*Edit:

The more I listen to these testimonials, referencing the glory of digibeta, the more I hate Sony.

One could say the next five years are going to be game changers, and they will be loaded with new cameras and tech, but from where we are now, how much better can the the finished, delivered product get?

Network TV looks better than it ever has, and shooting a project on an EX-1 and viewing on Blu-ray is quite amazing for $6,000

Shallow DOF with larger chips for less money seems like the main area for growth.

Sony does seem to be firing on all cylinders right now. It will be interesting to watch the competition going forward.

Being able to shoot at 60 or 120 fps at 1080p would be another area of improvment that the technology seems ripe for.

With the new rapid fall of prices in the low and mid ranges, I question as to whether or not even high end users will flock to a camera such as this one. Sure, a few users will buy and rent them, but I still see a considerable migration toward the lower end products. A producer friend of mine who could have afforded to rent a camera like this for a green screen feature that he is beginning is instead using the money for two EX1s with NanoFlash recorders. They have already shot tests and sent the footage to their Indian compositing company and viewed the tests. The higher end cameras, including RED and supposedly the F23 looked better but for the same money, the gained two of the EX1 and NanoFlash recorders, allowing them to move faster. Don't forget that we are living in the era of "good enough" and the era of "must be the best quality" is rapidly coming to an end.

These sorts of dinosaurs are a dying breed, except for a few studio/high end users. And even for those users, I predict a lot more usage of mid-range cameras like the 3700.

i have to agree. Technology seems to have come so far that anything a reasonably priced camera cant do you can get done in post.

After effects and even a lot of plug ins and tools for Avid/FCP are so amazing and cheap it's unbelievable!
