On that same note.......can a DV tape be recording simultaneously in SD while the P2 is recording HD? Not ideal but at least a "cheap low res" backup option. I doubt this is possible though.

I believe the HVX can record live video to the first two devices, but only transfer data to an ordinary Firewire drive after recording.

It basically allows you to dump the contents from the P2 cards to another medium so you can then erase the P2 cards to continue recording. The convenience is that this is handled via the camera rather than having to take the P2 cards out and put them in a laptop or other reader.

Neopics if this is true, then you basically just need a 4GB P2card to dump HD contents to another medium. This would eliminate swapping P2 cards but I guess the camera would be tethered to a hard drive or a lap top.

Interesting...

What intrigues me is the term they use - "even while recording it can output as the stream of DVCPROHD from the IEEE1394 terminal ..." You're right, it only specifically mentions the 1200A deck and FS100 as being able to record this simultaneous stream via Firewire. Their paragraph is in the P2 section of info, so the "while recording" seems to mean while recording to P2, you can simultaneously record to the 1200A or FS4 - no need to go through an extensive wait to back up your footage if it is simultaneously being backed up to the 1200A or FS4. You'd simply have to stop periodically and make sure your backup footage recorded correctly, and then press on with your production activities - a simplified on-location work flow...

Gibby,

What did you see in that "trainwreck of a translation" that gave you the impression that a self-powered firewire drive would be capable of recording simultaneously via 1394? I thought that only a firestore or smart device could do that?? I've read that section 5-6 times and don't see the reference to that.

Thanks!

Here's a link to the translated page with that info:

http://world.altavista.com/babelfis...http://panasonic.biz/sav/p2/hvx200/index.html

Scroll half way down that page and you'll find this paragraph:

720p over 60p mode
Converting to 60p, the VARICAM compatible mode which it records. For example at the time of 24p mode, 2: 3 pulling down, it records 60 scenes. Record time is the same as usual 1080i or 720p, but because even while recording it can output, as the stream of DVCPRO HD from the IEEE1394 terminal the DVCPRO HD recorder
AJ-HD1200A and FireStore of the FOCUS corporation (in the future correspondence) etc. connecting to the external HDD recorder, backup recording is possible.

Scroll about 3/4 of the way down that page and you'll find this paragraph that reiterates the capability:

Recording outside the IEEE 1394 stream is used
The IEEE1394 digital interface terminal (4 pins) it equips. Synchronizer backup recording which is linked the external equipment with the START/STOP operation of the camera is possible.
At the time of DVCPRO HD recording DVCPRO HD recorder AJ-HD1200A, at the time of DVCPRO 50/DVCPRO recording DVCPRO 50 recorder AJ-SD93, you can use many equipment such as AG-DV2500 at the time of DV recording.
In addition all codec which includes DVCPRO HD FireStore FS-100 of the FOCUS corporation which corresponds to AG-HVX200 (the next few days sale schedule) of making use (excludes native record mode) long haul record becomes possible.

Tired... so maybe missing something... so if can record to p2 and a hard drive or lap top at the same time...

Do you need a power book or the less expensive ibooks to record too?

It would only need to be tethered part of the time if you're shooting in short takes. Here's a work-flow I conceive would be suitable for me based on a narrative-type of shoot:

  • Use the HVX200 with only one P2 card
  • Shoot my takes, which are generally short with a fair bit of time in-between
  • Once the 4GB is filled, during one of these breaks: attach a Firewire drive, transfer the footage over, erase the P2 card and then detach the drive
  • Continue shooting more takes
  • Repeat as necessary...

You cannot, cannot, cannot stream video directly to a hard disk unless it's a specially-designed "intelligent" drive. You can record live to P2 and also stream out the firewire port, so you could have the deck or the computer or the firestore capturing at the same time as the P2 card is (or the tape, if shooting in DV mode). But to go to an external hard disk, you can only copy the contents of a P2 card to an external hard disk. No laptop is necessary for that; the camera itself can control the process of copying P2 cards to the hard disk.

If you want to record directly to an external hard disk, you'd have to have a laptop computer in between -- the laptop would handle processing the data stream and controlling the hard disk. Or you'd have to have a FireStore, which is a hard disk with its own miniature computer/controller capturing hardware built in.

Yeah, that jives with the text on the Japanese site. Enabling the Firewire-direct simultaneous recording use of Firewire drives wouldn't exactly enhance the sales of FS100's now would it? That's still an improved workflow situation for mobile ENG-style production, where a laptop isn't practical because of mobility issues. If the HVX was loaded with two 8GB P2 cards and an FS100 was mounted, you would only have to stop periodically to make sure the FS100 backup recorded correctly, then clear the footage off the P2 cards and work until you finished filling the FS100. If the FS100 had removable HDD, when the HDD then filled up, you'd simply have to shut down briefly to change out the HDD. Since the FS100 probably won't have a removable HDD, once the FS100 backup is full, and assuming you can't carry a laptop, you could keep on shooting in the field, but since the FS100 was full, the final fillup of the P2 cards would not be backed up to the FS100. It's a circuitous workflow, but at least it would keep you in the field longer for those types of hyper-mobile ENG-style shoots.

If you fill up an FS100, then why not just replace it with another one? It's still cheaper than an 8G P2. :)

I think the following paragraph says that you can record SD video to DV tape at the same time that you're recording HD to P2:

AG-HVX200 can load also mini- DV tape drive separately from the P2 card slot, DVX100 series equal 60i/30p/24p/24pA (can record with advanced) each mode. Furthermore if the P2 card is used, the over crank/the under crank the HD material which was photographed, knocking down converting after the frame rate converting with 720p native mode, dubbing it is possible in the mini- DV tape. Because of this, the speed effect expression which is obtained until recently with only the VARICAM full system at the time of DV producing it can actualize. Of course, the DVCPRO HD material which was recorded in the P2 card (1080i/720p) knocking down converting dubbing it is possible also in the DV tape to do.

Very good point! Now, if the FS100 had removable hard drives, it would be a lot cheaper to buy extra hard drives for it than to buy multiple FS100's...

In perusing the link for info i came across this little bit that was asterixed in the P2 card section?

* 2: The P2 card driver (attachment) installation is necessary in each equipment. The P2 card driver operates with WindowsXP and Windows2000.

Am i missing something (possible given the translation) or would this work against the ability to use P2 cards with the Mac OS at this point in time? If so I don't think I'm the only one who winces at that possibility.

It'd be like dad taking you to the zoo but leaving you in the car while you're brothers and sisters see the animals and you leave handprints on the windshield and tears on the dashboard. Tears of unfathomable sorrow.

Almost in contradiction of what it says earlier in the article about P2 driver OS compatibility their versatility workflow diagrams seem to show that the offloading of P2 cards to a laptop can be done regardless of the OS. I am con-fus-ed indeed.

Machinist, Kaku posted a great review/write-up on the HVX200 over on DVInfo. Check the article out here. Looks like there will be support for P2 on Apple. Here is a partial quote:

On MacOS, they are demonstrating with PowerBook G4 and had a beta version of FCP5 to implement the support for P2 card (DVCPRO HD format itself is already supported). Panasonic said they already approved the portion of FCP5 with Apple, so it is up to Apple to release the supported version of P2. The demonstration of the support of P2 on FCP5 is on my video, so you will be able to watch it later.

Couldn't find any significant info other than Kaku Ito's report on DVinfo... and much expected downloadable footage seems not to be available either.

However there are some info to be noted; one of the visitors reported elsewhere that it seems Panasonic is in a hurry to introduce HVX200 in December as they promised and as a result some of the features are not done quite right yet. Sadly this is exactly like when they introduced DVX100 originally.
Example;
*Focus Assist is not enough to achieve razor sharp focus even when used with Peaking feature.
(when Focus Assist is used, the center of the image is enlarged twice as big inside of a 4:3 PinP frame as shown HERE )
*Focus and zoom ring have not enough friction for smooth control.
*You cannot achieve super-slow-zoom as in DVC30 because HVX uses a dc motor while DVC30 uses a stepping motor.

Other than that, Century seems to be ready to introduce some lens attachment for HVX, like 0.75x wide convertor, 1.5x / 2.0x tele convertor and fisheye.

That's it for now.

I don't understand this... From a "wanting to emulate high production values" point of view there was one thing that frustrated me about the DVX100... and that was the zoom. Not enough friction in the manual zoom ring. And the slowest creep speed is far too quick.

When Panasonic brought out the DVC30 (which has a gorgeously slow zoom that you can really subtly creep in) I thought "Hooray... they're addressing the issue..."

I'm very sad we're going to end up with the same(?) crummy zoom speed that the DVX100A has. And I would have loved Panasonic to take a leaf out of the Sony Z1 and include programmable zooms.

Still... of course we all know that we shouldn't really be zooming in-vision anyway... The eyeball doesn't zoom and neither should our shots. But that's another discussion entirely!

Agreed...

This is really bad. It might not be a show-stopper but.. you know, I really want them to address all the *one more step* things before they roll it out !

All I just wanted was..
*underscan !
*flip-flop recording for DIY mini35's (not just in EVF like XLH1). I even send them a petition but to no avail.
*smoooooth zoom ring and zoom servo
*usable focus assist like the one found on JVC HD100

I really want to or rather going to get one as soon as they are out but I have a sense that HVX200a will come out in a year or so. It is very hard to make a decision now. I know, people might say "if you need it, get one now and if you are not, just wait", but...

By the way, I got Non-A type of DVX...

Thanks again for the info. Who was the resource of this information?
Can Jan back this info up as true?
