Insurance

I have not yet seen a post concerning insurance.

This is something im going to have to do with this camera due to its value and importance. I was wondering what kind of cover you guys recomend and use. How it may have helped you in the past. What things insurance may not cover. And what kind of price i will be facing after purchasing the camera.

This camera seems to resemble a beuty and the beast situation, beuty behing the camera, beast being the money involved. I hope this fairytail doesnt end with my camera getting stampeeded *could happen* without cover, and me behing forced to pay outrageous repair costs.

Any help would be apreciated. I would cover my camera with BUPA if i could. Only the best for my baby.

I have a commercial policy that I have all my gear covered under. It costs me about $.80 per $100 of coverage.
I have all my stuff covered for replacement value.

It's basically a one shot deal though. My insurance agent told me that with the cost of all my gear, if I ever have a claim they'll cancel the policy afterwards because I pay little in premiums.

My policy also has liability coverage as well.

I too am looking into this same thing and I'd be much appreciative if anyone can point me to places that they are using or know of.

n8ture, is that .80 per 100 per month? Every 6 months? What company are you doing this through.

I have heard of some people putting their gear on their homeowners insurance policy. I haven't looked into this myself yet, (I am soon going to,) but I guess you can do this with lots of different stuff, electronics, furniture, film gear...

It might cover theft or damage, but you might have to say that someone broke into your home or apartment. Not sure... Anyone have any experience/knowledge on this?

Brian,
It's for a 12 month policy.

It's with Allied Insurance.

The only two things I don't like are that if I have a claim they'll cancel the policy. Every year they audit me to see if they can raise my premium.

So, hopefully I'll never have a claim cause some of the other companies my agent looked at were outrageous for what they wanted.

Geoff,
I originally had my stuff on my homeowners. My agent informed me though since I was using the gear to make money, I needed a commercial policy and that my homeowners wouldn't cut it.

So, if you're making $'s I'd look into a commercial policy instead of homeowners.

Course I would talk to a qualified insurance agent before I made any choice. Gear is getting to expensive to risk to someone's advice on a board.

I went with State Farm. They have a Personal Items policy. You have to specify that you use the equipment for commercial purposes and they'll take the exception from the policy for an additional premium. My total was about $445 for $20000 worth of coverage including the HVX.

I'm with Zuric. I also have liability included. On some shoots, like with Carnival Cruise lines I had to show 1 million in coverage. I called my agent and he took care of it for me.
It saved my arse last year. I had a flood in my studio due to my landlord having the roof replaced during the rainy season. Long story short, it was up to me to cover my gear and rear.
I got over $20,000 and due to age of gear, updated what I had to and ignored the oldest stuff.
I DID get renewed! For once, I won!

I once had my equipment on my homeowners insurance policy. I was getting ready for a road trip, packing the car the night before so I could get an early start. Yes Yes I put my expensive stuff in the car too. But the car was in the garage. Well sure enough I got robed. Lost everything. A Nikon N90, about half a dozen lenses, and even my cousins Trombone. All together around 8 or 9k worth of equipment. It took 6 months to get it all replaced, but they did replace it.
