Insurance

I'm going to India and I just got an estimate for general liability and traveling abroad, and I received an estimate of $1500 dollars. Does this seem correct? I've gotten into the game of being an owner of my equipment and am definately new at the insurance game. Unfortunately, I left all my insurance problems till the final week before my departure to southeast asia and now I'm feeling sort of screwed.

Any advice would be helpful.
Thanks.

Make sure you have waivers for any "at risk" activities you may be encountering. This can include flying, boating, automobiles, underwater filming, etc. If you don't inform the insurance company up front what you will be doing and under what circumstances... you may run into issues if you try to make claim.

I usually pay about $800.00 for a single day small location shoot so $1,500.00 for an entire trip to a foreign country seems pretty reasonable if they are covering replacement cost and you are bringing what I assume to be around, what, U.S. $10k worth of gear? Does it cover liability or theft? Negative/videotape loss or damage?

I'm not clear, are you insuring your equipment or insuring for liability against damaging your clients location, personnel etc.
If we shoot on a cruise ship or other locations, we sometimes have to get a rider payable to that entity.

$1,500 seems pretty high for either. But I have ongoing insurance so I could be mistaken.
I pay about $300 per month for about $250,000 worth of gear including liability for personal injury.
Best of luck.

I pay $2K for a year of insurance on gear (2 HVX's, lens adapters, sound equip, dolly, crane, cards, etc), and liability for locations / crew / talent etc. This only covers me in North America, and I need extended coverage for overseas shoots.

This amounted to $250 dollars for a recent 10 day - 2 camera shoot in Hong Kong. Buying one off insurance on a per job basis is always more expensive than a full year of coverage.

Planning is part of the game.
