Hey guys

I used to use State Farm but I let that expire.. What insurance services do you use to cover all your gear in case of fire/theft/ or terrorist attack..?

Thanks much

dag, i literally was thinking the same thing and posted the same question three minutes after you. i didnt see your post you mustve been typing while i was too.

I'm not too worried about my gear getting attacked by terrorists :) , but I am in college and have been looking for good insurance for a while...

I have Liberty Mutual. I put lots of stuff on there, as long as I list it, and send them purchase receipts, they cover it.

I have had The Hartford for my company for a long time, but I just switched to Nationwide...they're a little more personable. Anyway, all I have (and need) is a policy to cover all of my gear ($370/yr for $21,000 worth of gear), and then I have a $2,000,000 liability policy.

Do you have a seperate policy for your gear, or do you add a rider to your homeowner/renter's insurance?

If the former, what type of insurance is it called?

Same question. A homeonwer's/renter's policy wouold do me no good if it were stolen from a rental client.

A home owners/renter's policy will do you no good if you use your equipment for commercial purposes either. I suppose if the insurance company doesn't find out about it, you'd be ok but why take the chance?

I have a million dollar liability policy as well as replacement cost on my equipment from Allied for somewhere between $500 and $600 a year.

I'll be upping the liability to two million since it seems more places are asking for that.
Heck, you need a two million dollar liability policy just to bring up a tripod and film on the SkyDeck of the Sears Tower. :)

ah I must be doing some thing wrong my quotes are coming back at like $3000 a year for insurance of about the same amounts as you guys....dam....

When you buy insurance on your gear and yourself/company make sure you know what you are getting. Simply insuring your equipment that has a value of $20k does not mean that if it is stolen you will automaticly get $20k to go buy new gear. Replacement cost insurance typically costs signigicantly more. Liability Insurance for a million sounds large but may not be nearly enough if you are responsible for injury to someone. on crew, set, observing your shoot. My adivice is call several insurers , set possible scenarios and ask what is covered, then ask again. Though things may be slightly different in America, insurance is big biz everywhere and complicated everywhere. My point is there is no point in paying for something if is useless when you need it. Check with your local State Insurance Regulators or in Canada with the Insurance Board of Canada. They will help and check with rental houses in your area and ask them who they do business with, they will tell you the like it when customers have good insurance. Professional associations and unions can also usually help. But a good insurance person and package is very important.

is this production / commercial insurance you speak of?

I have 27K of renters insurance.

But if I had 1 million of laibility production insurance ... then New York opens up to you ... you can shoot in almost ANY public location and even get a cop for free if it's necessary for like a $10 permit fee IF you have 1mil production insurance ... would your liability have covered you while you were shooting Black Angel?
