Installation Nightmare

Hi there:

put eight hours into installing Xpress Pro Hd last night and this morning. I still haven't been able to open the program without it getting runtime errors and crashing on me.

I'm running a Dell Precision 650 with dual 3.2 Xeons, 4 Gigs of RAM and an NVIDIA QUadrofx 3000 AGP 8x card.

I've got tons of hard drives. I've tried installing it on my boot drive, an Atlas 15K SCSI, I've tried insalling it on my two other internal hard drives.

For media storage I have a 300 Gig Medea Video RAID and a 500 Gig G-Tech GRAID.

At the end of every install attempt I get a message mentioning failure of an mxf. something file... I'll post the error message when I get home from work.

Then after rebooting, Avid starts, then I get three consecutive Runtime errors and it fails.

In between every install I remove all Avid folders and run a reg clean program.

Yes, I reboot every time it asks me to.
Yes, the dongle is in place.
I have reverted my NVIDIA drivers from the latest/greatest to the Avid recommended.
The diagnostic program tells me to revert my java to version 1.5, I do so but still get the same message.

On a lark, i went to the Avid site and registered my product, but it made no difference.

If this sounds like a common problem that's an easy fix, let me know. I can't find anything about it in tech support on Avid site.

I can be more specific about the error messages later tonight when I get home.

Thanks for any suggestions.

When you "remove all Avid folders" does this include OMFI MEDIAFILES as well as the AVID MEDIA FILES folder for MXF media? You probably are already doing this, but I'd definitely delete those two folders on EVERY drive once I got the failure message, then reboot and restart Avid to let it re-create them...

Another long shot, disconnect every drive except your boot drive and see if you can install Avid successfully on that drive with no media drives connected. (I had one hard drive that ALWAYS freaked Avid out and finally just got rid of it).

I tried removing all my hard drives. Same results.

At the end of the install, before it reboots, I get the message:
"Registry Key: Software\Classes\.mxf coult not be set"

Then I reboot and get the same Access violations as I try to open Avid.

Then after rebooting, Avid starts, then I get three consecutive Runtime errors and it fails.

What are these errors? I've never heard of a Software\Clases\.mxf, but if you post those other runtime errors it might give me a clue....

Also,

-What version of Quicktime is installed?

-(obvious question here but it has to be asked) Are you using XP Pro with SP2 installed?

I have the latest version of QUicktime Pro. I'll try looking for updates before the next install.

*** I already am using Quicktime 7.04. the latest version.

Avid actually is looking for Windows Media 10 when it installs, not Quicktime.

Yes, XP PRo, SP2, all drivers and windows componants are up to date except for the Nvidia drivers, which I installed an earlier, certified, version and Java 1.5 which didn't make any difference.

I'm thinking that this afternoon I will completely uninstall Adobe Studio Pro Premium, in case it's conflicting.

I've never had a program give me this much trouble!

Okay. I'm downloading an upgrade 5.2.4. Hopefully, this will install better than the boxed version!

I get the same results with the 5.2.4 upgrade right down to the "Registry Key: Software\Classes\.mxf coult not be set"

Uninstalling Adobe Production Studio now.

Do you think my problems could be coming from my NTFS file systems on my hard drives?

I use an AUdigy II Platinum EX sound card. Could this be causing me problems?

I'm starting to feel like I'm talking to myself now.

---Yes I do.

Shut up! I'm talking!

---Blah, blah blah.

I need a break. Unfortunately, once I start to tackle a problem like this I can't stop. It drives me nuts.

---Indeed.

Uninstalling Adobe will take some time. I'll be doing more searching on the Avid website for more hints.

Any suggestions (other than suggesting I buy a Mac) would be appreciated.

---...But you know, you wouldn't have this trouble if you had a Mac and used Final Cut.

I don't care.

---Well, you would.

Why can't you be a little more constructive about my current situation instead of tossing me a bunch of "I-told-you-so's"

---Why don't you take a break and get some shut-eye. You are starting to act out these little conversations with your inner voice. I worry about you.

Don't worry about me. Worry about AVID and getting it running.

---Oh, all right.

Windows XP Pro with Service pack 2.
Since Thursday night I've updated all Windows files available.
Adobe is GONE and I'm going to try to install it on my boot drive again.

Are you set up as an admin on that machine? That could certainly cause registry problems during the install....

I am the Administrator. I have the only account on my workstation.

I've just gong into Windows and replaced a lot of files I don't normally use.

Here's a question:
My hard drives are all formatted with NTFS. does that make a difference?

Okay. I have uninstalled all Adobe Products, reinstalled Quicktime 7, replaced all multimedia files from Windows and updated them, Removed any programs I am not using from the hard drive, defragged and reinstalled Avid.

SAME DANGED THING! Exactly the same messages.:furious3:

I give up. That's a thousand bucks and about 20 hours or so I've wasted on this and it's making me sick to me stomach.

I'm reinstalling Adobe Creative Suite Production Studio Pro and reconnecting all of my hard drives and giving up.

I don't have a way to record HD yet, anyway.

Tra la la. I throw my hands in the air in frustration, turn and kick kitty litter over this experience (whatever that means).:badputer:

Thanks for enduring my frustration. I have NEVER not been able to get a new program to at least OPEN!!!

Have a good evening.

Well, in answer to your earlier question, NTFS is actually the way to go. Don't mess with other file systems on a Windows based Avid.

Secondly, and I hate to suggest this to anyone, but if you've gone through this much headache, why not just format and reinstall the OS, then put Avid on first thing. That's almost a sure-fire way to fix the error, and if it still persists, then I'd guess that there's a hardware problem on that box, and not a software one.

Just a suggestion. Good luck. Sorry your experience has been frustrating.

Reformatting seems like the next step, but it takes two to five evenings to get all my crap installed and updated.
If I do a reformat I'm picking up a bigger boot drive.
I've got time. I'll call tech support Monday.
I reinstalled Adobe Studio in an hour and a half and was able to reimport all my 3rd party plugins, so I'm styling for now.

I'm going off to have a beer or two and pass out on the couch now.

Ciao

BigMike,

Again, sorry to hear how frustrating your experience has been. I've gone through similar problems trying to get Avid to run. But it always ended up being an improper environment for the software or faulty hardware.

Get yourself another boot drive, install WinXP Pro SP2 and then Avid. Make sure no other hard drives are connected. If Avid still doesn't start, then you must have some faulty hardware.

Let me know how it goes.
