inspiration

Rich Lee

I shoot Pirates.
what do you guys do to get inspired?

i usualy take a drive, look at some magazines, take a shower (somehow hot showers get my creative juices flowin), watch movies...

though, lately i have been feeling pretty beat, my day job is kinda getting the best of me...and there doesnt seem to be an end in site...and i need to be coming up with cool ideas on the side...i just feeel blah...and unfortunately i dont do drugs...so no drug induced creative voyages for me.

:undecided

Listen to your favorite CD and take a hot bath, instead of a shower. Let the water surround you and carry you away to some mystical place. Where leprechans dance on peppermint sidewalks. There you will find the creative answers you're looking for.

Actually, DVXuser inspires me. All these different people trying to live their dream. I saw a short film last night, Prey Alone. It was done by one of our members. It reminded me of something you would do, Rich. Have you seen it? The entire thing was greenscreened and CG'd. http://www.preyalone.com

Seeing stuff like that is inspiring.

Hope you find your inspiration and good luck at work,
Pk

That's funny. I get some of my best ideas from hot showers. Sometimes a good walk or hike will be good for inspiration. If you can, get out of the city. Go fishing, find a cabin and do a little shining for a bit.

I don't know if you write, but writing helps me. Even on really shitty writing days it's good to do the process. I'll also try and do things non film related to get inspired.

Sometimes you just need to switch up your routine. When you find your days blending together you gotta make an effort to mess up that routine. Throw a monkey wrench into the mix. I don't know what that wrench is, but find one.

EDIT: My monkey wrench method also works for relationships too.

Check out some good theatre if you can. It's a nice change from watching films.

I listen to film scores. It really works well, as long as it's not from an instantly identifiable film. I usually put ten different forgettable soundtracks from good movies on "shuffle". Of course Yahoo's Launchcast now has a "film scores" station that is decent (as long as you're ready to fast forward through "Gonna Fly Now" from Rocky...a great song, but doesn't inspire me to do anything but hit meat and to be an Italian heavyweight from south Philly.)

Pub crawls are also always nice. In a crowded bar, listen to different speech patterns/notice body languages. I've been inspired by a colorful phrase that I had never heard in that particular context before.

THE best source of inspiration for me is . . .

1. Go to a photo gallery opening.
2. Go to a fine art gallery opening.
3. Go to a film festival.

Seeing others' work always inspires me. Whether I get ideas derivative from the work that I see there, or I just get that, "Boy, I can shoot something waaaaaaaaay better than THAT" kinda feeling, I usually go home with at least one new creative idea.

Plus, photo and art gallery openings sometimes have a lot of cool art chicks. I recently went to this bi-monthly art event in downtown L.A., called "CREATE:FIXATE," which shows the works of like 30 photographers. The quality of work was VERY good. Live band, several bars, performance artists (when I went, they were nude chicks with body paintings) and open 'til like 2:00AM or something. Also, I couldn't believe how hot and how many "art groupie" chicks there were there.

By watching others work and listening to good music thinking about the good life feeling bad for myself and just picturing myself on the red carpet.

No not the one at home I haven't vacumed in a week LOL LOl Lol lol okay maybe not

I'll echo NBCshooter's suggestions of visiting galleries. I recently experienced the Milwaukee Art Museum's "Film As Found Object." It was a fresh view of the medium of film. It means a lot to be able to actually "physically touch it."

Going to a museum will help "fill the pool" of creativity. We all draw from a communal pool of infinite creativity. It's inspirational to view others' expressions of reality, and our reactions fuel our own art.

Dreams, either waking or sleeping, are vital to our understanding of our lives and our world(s). We share these worlds. We each have a unique view of truth and reality. Sharing these views is the spice of life. There can be no truth without the truths of others. One day I'll share my truths with y'all.

I fast for three days and perform a Native American sweat lodge ceremony asking The Great Spirit for visions.

Ironic, because I find that cooking is very inspiring for me.
Seriously.

Another thing I do is to try to put myself in situations where I will meet new people.
New people can many times bring a new perspective.... which can bring new ideas.
(which is a big part of why I spend so much time here)

The irony gets even deeper...I often find the opposite of cooking to be a fertile time....I get some of my best ideas on the throne!

my ideas come from the smallest things. I see a bug crawling, then I get a cool idea for a drama...

I also get ideas in the weirdest places. And when I don't have anythign to write them down on, I forget the idea in 30 minutes or so, even though I'm trying so hard not to forget it. Then for the next day, I'm trying to think of what that idea I had was... which spawns another idea, which I try to write down.

Repeat cycle.

when i'm tryin to get pumped, i'll watch the lotr documentaries, and start feeling, "that's awesome, i wanna do that!"

it works for other stuff too, like if i'm gonna go bmx, i'll watch a props video first.

if i'm trying to think of a storyline or something, i kinda go rodriguez style and take a cool object close to me and write a story around that. a whole short originated from a briefcase my brother has.

I don't know about you guys but WOMEN is my inspiration. For most people women are the distraction but for me its the complete opposite! Lately, there's this one who keeps me on my toes and inspires me to become creative in filmmaking and everything else.

"Dats Hot!"

Ok, Blue has a good point. Women are good for inspiration, ...and perspiration.

Ba-du-dum (cue drum hit) :)

I guess we all have a muse. Maybe it's a woman, maybe it's a bug (I'm looking at you LloydC), maybe its a photo of a beach. We all have something in our lives that takes us away to our special place. For some, our special place takes a way to a special place. :)

Thank you, ...Be sure and tip your waitresses.

There's your SciFi film! A waitress, lying out on the beach on her day off, when suddenly a giant mechanical spider appears and...
