Inside Man

I have mixed feelings about Spike. It was She's Gotta Have It that inspired me to be a filmmaker in the first place. But I think if we met in person, we wouldn't get along too well. That said, I think he's one of the best filmmakers that America has produced in the last 20 years.

Well despite what I said early I'll be the first one to say that I hated the inside man, from it being overly drawn out in length, to the terrible writing, editing, and worst score that I've heard on a theatrically released film. chock this into the will never see again film pile

I cannot believe anyone could dog a fillmaker who, on his first film, asked the cast and crew to save their soda cans so he could use the extra change to buy film stuff. That is pure heart.

The obstacles Spike had to overcome (in 1986!) far outweigh many of the obstacles we have had to overcome.

I have to say one of my most favorite joys in retail life was cutting up Spike Lee's American Express card. He was a regular shopper at the huge ass store in Times Sq. I worked in, and let's just say he wasn't very popular.

As for his movies, eh. I'm not a huge fan. Like the man I find them pompous and pretentious, always wanting to be more than they are. That's just me. I really can't stand the man, so his art really does nothing for me.

The trailers for Inside Man did nothing for me either. Looked like a by the book action movie that seemed predictable from the first reel.

Another 10 bucks that I can safely say will be tucked in my wallet next to the 10 bucks I'll save by not seeing that cable-health inspector guy movie. 20 bucks for me. Where to go? What to see?

well it wasn't really a generic by the book action movie, he tried his best to attempt something original with editing and jumbled story, which just ended up being really annoying and overly predictable to watch instead of thought provoking and mysterious as I'm sure he intended.

It was pretty crappy, but I'm going to say what's already been stated:

Extremely predictable, made me want to try to predict what was coming.
Not as interesting as the trailer.

What the hell does Jodie Foster have to do with anything?

And the script was poorly written. As stated in another thread in the Screenwriting forum,

"You don't have to answer all of the questions, you just need to write yourself an ending."

Or....
he attempted "original" editing to cover up the mess of a movie he made.

yeah I love spikes directing, in 25th hour, the scenes her puts his actors on a board, and pulls them, thats just original lol.

well, I started this thread, and now I have to eat my words. I thought this movie was good. The only movie I've ever liked of Spike's (I've realized recently that the only reason I liked "Do The Right Thing" was because people told me it was important and that I should). I only saw half the trailer 3 months ago and so didn't remember anything about the movie. I think that may have something to do with people calling the movie 'predictable' (with trailers these days telling the entire story, of course you're going to be able to 'predict' what happens in the movie. You've already seen it!).

There were annoying Spike'isms abound (he just HAD to make race an issue, boards pulling actors, and as mentioned above, the TERRRRRIBLE jazz score) but overall the movie was fun and kept you guessing (unless you saw the trailer of course). Clive was great, Denzel was Denzel, Jodie was terrible, that new hot chick with the big bajonkers is my new girlfriend, and I love that Serenity black dude. He's my new favorite actor). The 'surprise' of how he pulls off the heist was good I thought, and should've ended the movie. But I guess even 'artsy' Spike has Spielberg syndrome and had to give his movie 18 endings. Still, I enjoyed myself.

Ok just got back from seeing Inside Man. I have to say that I liked the film. I'm not the biggest Spike Lee fan there is, but I really liked this movie. I thought the performances were very good. It was shot very well. I thought the story was pretty good. I liked how it played out. I was never expecting it honestly. I give it 3 outta 5 stars.

I saw the inside man, it was pretty entertaining, but the ending was confusing. I'm kind of late here.. but Spike is one of my favorite directors, his style is original, and that's rare.

I like all his movies, because of the weirdness of them, but my favorite has to be Mo Better Blues.

Does anybody know if he wrote Inside Man, I think he was just the directord, correct me if I'm wrong.

Thanks, Ravinesedge, I thought so, most people see director Spike Lee and they automatically think he wrote it. from the preview I knew this wouldn't be something he would write... not saying the story wasn't good, but just not his style... 3stars out of 4.

I saw this movie last night and I thought it was pretty good.
I expected a lot of cheese slomo action with explosions and stupid Michael Bayish background music, so I was pleasantly surprised.

But some shots distracted me: The dolly shot with denzel in front moving fast past the cops looked pretty cheesy.

The other one was earlier in the movie when the cops interviewed the hostage with the (missing) turban. The three guys talking were in the left part of the frame and you could see the cops vehicle outside of the building through the windows in the right part of the frame. I expected something going on with the car, so I focused on what's happening outside instead of following the conversation. But nothing happened, so it was just not proper framed.

the soundtrack wasn't the greatest either. the first 2 or 3 songs sucked really really bad. after those it sorta got better but not great...

I saw Inside Man yesterday afternoon and really enjoyed it! Loved all the performances, especially Denzel... always love Denzel, he's great! The movie had a few twists I didn't expect too! Really good film. Some of the music and music cues I didn't like, but that's getting nit-picky... Check it out if you can!

I saw Inside Man on opening day and just LOVED IT.

Best of '06 so far IMHO.

Really really fun film!
