Inserting My own text into AE Template

Has anyone experienced a lack of response in other sections of the forum? I've found the AF100 section to be the most helpful to me by far.
I'm putting my sizzle reel/trailer together - stock-footage AF100 and GH2 footage and graphics.

I downloaded this AE template but need to put in my own text.
Can anyone help?

I have AE and opened it for the VERY FIRST time ever, LOL. I thought it would be easy like a
motion template. I've changed my text, finally, after reading a readme.txt file and watching a youtube tutorial.
I had to use a provided pre-rendered version, that got rid of the error messages. I've changed the text but nothing has happened.
I cannot see a preview of my text and don't know how to get this into FCP X even if I did.

If you can help or guide, let me know.

Meanwhile, I'm going to youtube some more tutorials. Time crunch!

I do not have the template you are referring to (and I am not giving them my CC number, even for a free trial), but to do a RAM preview of what is in your composition, all you need to do it hit the number 0 on the number pad (right side of keyboard). Alternatively, if you have the "Preview" pane open, you can select the right-most button, which is also RAM Preview.

A few other tips about AE: use page up and page down to go frame-by-frame through your composition, the L and R arrow keys do not do this. To export a completed composition, you need to go to Composition > Add To Render Queue. In the Render Queue is where you change the settings for what you are about to export.

Feel free to ask anything else, or PM me. I use AE almost every day, but I am always learning new things about it.

Cheers Bobby!
Thanks much.
I gave them a CC for a card that has only $20 left on it, if it tries to charge, it'll decline. I'm canceling as soon as I've downloaded all my needs.
If you want the template, I'll send you the zip.

Cheers!

Didnt look at the template as I already read the above about the CC.

Most AE projects I create, or others create use precomposed layers. That is one part of the project where a number of layers are used then that is precomposed into the final project where other precomps are added together along with some final layers etc etc. In the main project any layer that is represented by a little film strip looking icon ( see the top text layer in this image for an example - https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-KZofemX_gNg/TXPX9JQB4kI/AAAAAAAAAhs/X25XFZp6p7A/s1600/5.png, is a precomposed layer. There should be one in the project you're using that has the text part you're trying to access. Double click this icon to open the precomposed layer and you should then be able to access the text you want to edit.

I went to composition and added it to the render queue, clicked render and now it says: "you must at least have one item queued in order to render"
There's a whole bunch of buttons, output, etc. I just want something I can use in FCP X, .MOV, preferably but I can't see how to specify this.

Now I'm rendering and I have no audio. I checked the output module and it's set to off.
I have no idea how to set it to on so I can have audio. Also my end product is being cut in half!
Well, it's not being cut in half. It just freezes halfway through.

Oh Lord!
I finally figured this out, almost a day later!!
I was rendering to animation instead of HDV 24p, etc.
Cheers!

AE is not intuitive at first.

Lynda.com has a great series of tutorials on AE, some of which are available free. If you can sit through 2 or 3 hours of videos, it will equip you with everything you need to know on all the basics.

Cheers man. Lynda.com, it is. I'll check those out at some point. For now, I must finish this trailer. I'll post the trailer and everything when it's done. Cheers!

True, true, Tom. I checked it out. Very nice. Perhaps if I had known videomated before, but I'm not adverse to at least learning the basics, especially if there are free videos at Lynda. I mean as I got in, it began to make sense. It was just a shock to my system. Didn't think I'd not even be able to make head or tail out of AE. Luckily, with all the help and pointers here, I successfully used the template and I absolutely love it. It's the first time I've ever had to use AE and with this first taste, I doubt it'll be the last.
