Inserting clips and A/B roll help!

Hi there, I've been working with avid and now I'm switching to vegas. I have read the manual and read many posts, but I haven't found any info on three issues:

1) Can I work in a single layer, as in Avid? Anytime a cut something in goes to the B roll layer. Is that they way vegas works?

2) when I insert a clip in the middle of an event, not before or after, I would like basically the same action as to cut in the insert position and then move everything else forward in the timeline, but with vegas the clip only rests there overlapping the other track. Is there a setting that would make vegas work like that?

3)what's the difference of overlapped layers, and using different video tracks?

thanks!

I'll answer #1):

Yes, if you look on the very left side of the video track you will see a minimize button, underneath that a maximize button, and then underneath that a "Expand/Collapse Track Layers" button. Click that button and I believe that'll give you what you're looking for.

To answer #2: I have yet to find, nor do I believe that there is any keyboard shortcut/command to do an insert edit as opposed to an overlap edit.  It seems the only way to do this is by using the post-edit ripple tools (more commands really).

You have the option of doing it manually for each edit, or automatically, where it occurs whenever you place an event that affects another.  I could explain it all, but it's explained much better in the help file.  Just look-up "post-edit ripple".  The problem with this is that it can become a cumbersome aspect of your workflow every time you want to insert an event.

I don't understand why exactly Vegas functions this way because if you really wanted an event to overlap another, you are already able to simply place it on a track above the current track.  Doing so is a much more organized and simple method IMHO. If I read your question right, this answers #3; there is no difference!  Other than the fact that you have less control and everything looks more cluttered when you overlap things on one track.  Hopefully this will be recognized as a redundant and less efficient feature and change it so that you can do different sorts of edits WHEN you add it to the timeline, not after (which is currently the case).

Sorry, I couldn't provide a better solution... :-/

Re: Inserting clips and A/B roll help!

The reason Vegas does not automatically insert an edit and leaves it lying over the other event is that it is designed to work with takes: ie. you can have two (or more) events stacked one on top of the other (on the same track) and toggle between them to see which best fits the project at that moment - use the take option to do so...Actually very useful in my experience...

Paul.

Re: Inserting clips and A/B roll help!

Hmmm, at least they did it for a reason. I've never had to use the takes feature. I'll be looking in to this to see if it really improves workflow more than having the ability to do insert edits and the like.
