Input on Directing Samples

I haven't posted here in over 2 years, but I just graduated college and wanted to get some input on my directing work and what I need to do better. I'm trying to go into commercial directing and then into film directing if I'm doing well enough in commercials. My plan is to make at least one spec commercial every two months until I start getting directing work, so any input regarding that would be helpful.

Thanks!

Target Ad was good, good lighting and music. Graphics just need a little more pop and no one would no the difference from ads on tv.

Great job!

Hi David. Im gonna jump right to the doco - A conversation with Bryan Holland, and talk about the directing side - thats what you want right?

First off, I thought it was really well constructed. You told a story, and you stuck to a solid point formula and moved easily through the piece to the end. This is pretty hard to do IMO, and you did a great job. I mean I dont care who the guy is, but I wanted to watch and see how it went. You portrayed him very evenly.

Some of the shot choices werent fantastic. I can see clearly you were trying to change it up, but you were killing the head room. Some of the edits could be cleaned up as well, in relation to cuts and titles - just a side point.

Id really like to see what you could do with a tougher / more interesting subject. Not that theres anything wrong with Bryan or who he is or what he does, I mean something with a bit more meat on it. Youve really presented this well though. Where are you located?

Leo: I'm not sure I quite understand what you mean when you say the graphics need more pop. Are you referring simply to the colors, or are you talking about the font in general?

Noel: I just moved to NYC 2 weeks ago to start working as a PA and build up my directing reel on the side. That was actually my first documentary and I only spent about a week making it because I didn't think docs were my thing. After doing it though, I realized that they're a lot more enjoyable and easy to make than I previously thought. Knowing that now, I wish I had spent more time on it and I definitely want to try to pursue more documentaries in the future with bigger topics.

Thanks for the input so far. Please keep the feedback coming.
