i know the lcd screen on the hvx gives an accurate "end to end" of the image being captured. But what are the secondary, inner guidelines for? Ive noticed that on most 4:3 tv's a fraction of the image gets lost ont he sides, top and bottom. Is this what the inner guidelines attempt to avoid? or is it something else?

The outer lines are your action safe. You can also see it in your editing suite. They all have the option to show that. Action safe means that anything you see outside those lines will be cut off. So you want to keep the action within the outer box. The inner box is Title safe. Thats where you would be putting the titles and text. Again most if not all editing software will also give you the ability to see those lines so when you finish you can make sure what is seen and what is not, and make sure that you text will be seen and not cut off also.
