Ink Transition

I am trying to achieve an Ink transition look similar to the one in tthis video

I am more interested in the technique to use to shoot the actual ink in the HVX. Mode, rate, speed, as well as what to use (water on white background-then drop india ink, watercolor paper and slash india ink). I am a bit lost. Has anyone ever experimented with this?

Studio Artist (synthetik.com) does this in a snap. Also, try not to do multiple posts for the same question.

OK, Mac wins this round. Cool software BenB. Anything like that on the pc. I've seen some AE plugins with paint effects but they never really blew me away.

SA runs fine on Intel Macs, although technically it's not Universal Binary yet. They are working on a UB version, which will also introduce a Windows version. But they are not giving any clue as to when that will be released.

I can make these paint drip effects with just black and white, maybe gray scale, then use it as my mask in a composite overlay in FCP. I may do an experiment with it this weekend. That way, you have a QT movie to use as your mask image, and can apply it to any video clip. Otherwise, just do it all in SA and only have the effect on those two clips. I think I like the mask movie better, then you can recycle it as needed.

Yeah, I'm going to have to do an experiment with this effect this weekend. I'll post what I find.

This effect is achievable with anything that can animate masks. Tt looks like they used a plug-in to generate the shape and used it as a matte. if your using After Effects, Trapcode makes a good plugin that'll animate geometry using sound called Sound Keys.

You can also animate the matte manually, but that would be tedious and take a long time.

Id try and avoid using Final Cut Pro to do effects work as it doesn't offer the kind of control you'll need. Id suggest After Effects or Motion

Good to know the SA might come to the pc eventually. Don't know much about it, but looks good. Making animated mask makes sense. Look forward to seeing youre experiment.
I just saw "Stay" recently, really cool movie and they did some subtle paint effects as if the walls were melting. If you haven't seen it, I highly recommend it.

The unique thing about SA is you can paint your strokes by hand and have it animated live out to a QT movie. You can set your parameters and have more natural flow and strokes than anything else will give you. The point of SA is to get the most natural paint textures possible. Other plug-ins and software doesn't give you "natural" textures, just CG looking curves and movement.
