Inexpensive monitor

Please file in the "for what it's worth dept.":

Evin suggested the the 17" Sony MFM-HT75w as an inexpensive alternative to the Panasonic monitor for those of us on a tight budget. This monitor is no longer made but can still be found on ebay for about $550.

I was looking for a monitor but needed it shipped quickly which no one on ebay could do. I ran across the the Sony MFM-HT95w at J&R (JR.com) which is the same monitor except that it is the 19" version. It was on sale for $399 which seems pretty reasonable. I just got the monitor a couple of days ago and am very very pleased with it.

I checked the price today (8/31/06) at JR.com and note that it is up to $429.99, but I would still think this is quite a bargain. So, I am only mentioning this here in case anyone is looking for an inexpensive monitor solution.

No biggie, just be careful next time. :) I would also suggest searching Keyword, Monitors in the HVX section.

Hi:

How come this monitor looks like a 4x3 monitor in the pictures? It is a widescreen model like the 17" was? FWIW, I own two of the 17" models and the production company I work with bought three of them. We are VERY satisfied with them for the money.

Not as good as the Panasonic 17" but a very good value and definitely good enough for focus and rough color assesment.

You are correct. This is really the same monitor as the 17", just with a tall display. In fact, they both share the same manual. The 17" version resolution is 1280 dots by 768 lines and the 19" version is 1280 dots by 1024 lines. Other than being taller (hence the 4x3 look) and slightly heavier, they are identical. When in 16x9 the picture appears letter-boxed, i.e., widescreen with a black border on the top and bottom of the screen.

Great features, component or s-video input. Two computer inputs. Remote control. Three year warranty. VERY LOW PRICE.

Focusing is finally a snap... even for these tired old eyes!

I have the PAL version of the 17" Sony MFM-HT75w and found that the component overscans the image resulting in a picture quality less than the p2 viewer.

Does this not happen on the NTSC?

Hi Paul:

Feeding the monitor a 720P signal, it looks beautiful, it looks much better than P2 Log on my Mac G4.

I have fed a 1080i signal to the monitor and it also looked great, even with it's scaling.
