Indifocus quick review

I recently was purchasing a follow focus for the HVX to use on our feature "American Standard" - after configuration issues with the more "expensive models" I gave indifocus a call. They overnighted a unit.

My take - this is amazing value at the price point and we have been able to perform all necessary focus moves with solid repeatability. It works very well with the HVX and its nice to know it will work with my 35mm adapter and dvx.

Great marking ring, 2 true hard stops, smooth operation, port for whip attachments.

If you are in the market for a follow focus (and I think one is critical when working in HD) - look at the indifocus - well worth the money and more. Just make sure to tell them you are getting it for the HVX so they send you an assembly that will allow you to change the iris wheel.

How is the assembly different? Does it run off the iris dial? I have the original one I got for my DVX - now I have the HVX but how does it work better?

I think he means that the more cramped working area requires an offset bracket to avoid blocking the iris wheel.

This bracket is now available for HVX users and anyone who specifies that they will be using the indiFOCUS specifically with an HVX.

I just got the VariZoom focus/iris controller and I really like it. The only problem with the focus knob is that its very sensitive. I'm planning on getting a bigger knob for it to help with this problem. But its much easier to adjust focus and the iris from the controller. At least I think so.

i have one also - its good but I find it to be useless during shots - only really good during setup due to its sensitivity and lack of marking areas. Its also good for setup on a jib.

I used the indifocus with a focus puller on the fig rig and it was wonderful - consider it

I've got the Varizoom PZFI. It's okay. Not ideal for precise focus because as Drew said, it's a bit sensitive and the small size of the wheel doesn't give you a lot of leeway. But it does work. I think the Foxi is a better focus controller, but it's well over double the price too, so it should be...

Tim sent me an IndiFocus HVX parts kit but I can't get it to fit. I keep meaning to take a photo and send it to him...

Barry how does that Foxi do the job? Now that I've seen it I would much rather have that as a follow focus than the VariZoom. If the PZFI wasn't so damn sensitive it would really be a problem.

The Foxi works well. The Varizoom does seem a tad too sensitive for my taste. The prerelease Foxi was just about as sensitive, and as such I wasn't that impressed, but they sent a new production model right before the HD BootCamp so Jarred, Evin and I all got to try it out at the same time and we all said the same things: "wow" and "nice."

Barry, is that one that isn't out yet. Or are those the ones that the company is sending out. What do you think about using it instead of a gear driven follow focus?

They loaned me a production model to check out, so I would assume it's out now, sold by 16x9inc.com.

As compared to a gear-driven: there are unique advantages to both, of course. The Foxi can be used remotely, you can get extension cables etc. Whereas it would be useless with a mini35/micro35 lens, or with any camera other than an HVX or DVX100B. The physical gear-driven FF can be used with any lens on any camera now or in the future, but costs 3x as much and can't be remotely controlled (well, with a whip you can get a few feet of distance but that's about it).

But the Foxi does seem to be a credible substitute for a gear-driven FF at 1/3 the price of the Vocas/CineTech/Chrosziel gear-driven FF's.

Thanks Barry. I'm not really worried about having a mini35 rig on my camera anytime soon. If I want that shallow of a DOF then I'll rent a VariCam or something. Personally I think the HVX has really good DOF. But you just have to keep it on the long end of the lens.
