Indie feature shot on DVX100!!!

Just wanted to let you all know that we finished post production on a feature film titled "Cavite" shot with a Panny DVX100 (about 20 hours of footage - slimmed down to 86 minutes) and edited on Vegas 4.0 (6 months of editing).

Please check out our website and let us know what you think.

Re: Indie feature shot on DVX100!!!

The storyline seems to be really interesting. Although it's a sensitive issue and I should hold my comments till I actually have a chance to see it. But Nice work, seems like something really nice!

Re: Indie feature shot on DVX100!!!

This looks very interesting. I dont see this as that controversial an issue (its just a movie.). Love the website as well, very professional. Keep us in the loop. Trailer B seems all chopped up; is this a PAL issue? :P

Nevertheless, looks good.

Re: Indie feature shot on DVX100!!!

Hey everyone thanks for the comments. We take any constructive criticism seriously and use it to improve our work. thanks again.

I have a proposal. The first 5 people that email me their mailing address, I will send a copy on CD-R of the first 15 mins of our project (quicktime or windows media player). I'll take care of the disk and the postage with the caveat that whatever you think of it, whether it be good or bad, post it on here.

Here's my email...

thanks again!

Re: Indie feature shot on DVX100!!!

Nicely shot. Footage looks great. Cinematography has a real indi film feel overall. Could be a powerful piece when it's done. Loved the large image I was looking at but I had problems viewing it. Trailer A was very choppy (didn't have time to watch the others right now as the file sizes are large). My guess would be this is a quicktime compression issue. How did you compress this? How long is the feature and what was your budget? Also, did you have a hard time getting the interiors of the airport terminal and the airplane?

The subject matter doesn't bother me because as horrifying or politically incorrect as it is to admit it, this kind of stuff is really happening today. These are the times we live in. Cudos to you for bravely tackling it.

Re: Indie feature shot on DVX100!!!

hey storyteller thanks for the comments! sorry the site was a bit tough on you. we're barely learning all this html crap. i know i know...in this day and age, you gotta be able to do make films and web pages...but it'll improve as we learn.

to answer some questions, we had a pretty low budget. lets just say we've studied the no budget filmmaking books by rick Schmidtt and Robert Rodriguez like bibles. as far as the shots in the airport and airplane, there really wasn't any trouble. i dont know how high the risk was of filming stuff in airports and airplanes these post 9/11 days but i said "eff it lets do this..."

but if you thought those shots might have given us trouble, you should see the other crap we get into throughout the film, location-wise...

;)

Re: Indie feature shot on DVX100!!!

i am watching more & more of your available footage and I love it. I wasnt sure when I saw the opening of trailer A . . . light pls . . . but the following tuff is locations and compositions to die for!

Re: Indie feature shot on DVX100!!!

Very intense stuff. I like the minimal use of music in the trailers, but I thought that the vocals toward the end of trailer B were a bit distracting.

But I'm just picking nits here. Looks like a fine effort, very professional indeed (aided by your location, composition, and trailer edit). Best of luck with the film.

Re: Indie feature shot on DVX100!!!

Hey thanks for the comments everyone! I'm currently working on making some minor changes to trailer A so hopefully that will be up soon. If you all are still interested, my offer still stands. Email me your mailing addy and i'll be glad to get you out the first 15mins of our film!

Re: Indie feature shot on DVX100!!!

That is awesome. What a great review! Damn. I remember when Film Threat was a little newsprint rag.

Re: Indie feature shot on DVX100!!!

Hey everyone thanks for the comments! We're pretty excited about Film Threat's review of the film. Hopefully, this opens the door a little wider for us to get the opportunity to make another film (with somebody else's money!)

Anyway, I was just wondering if anyone else got their discs. If so, any thoughts? Comments? Good? Bad? Ugly?

;)

Thanks guys!

Re: Indie feature shot on DVX100!!!

hey neill, great trailer! it grasps me and makes me want more...i sent you an email if you have anymore cd's to give out...salamat!

Re: Indie feature shot on DVX100!!!

I watched the first 15 minutes and I have to say WOW! This is great stuff. I am so hooked and am now pissed that I can't watch the whole thing. It has a nice feel that reminds me of Amorres Perros, 21 Grams or In This World. Im not going to comment too much on any technical issues as that is a stylistic choice and SUBJECTIVE ANYWAY.

I like this and cant wait to see it. I loved the scenes by HUDSON BAY SEAFOOD! I go there alot for the Buck Platter and 9 Million Ounce Beer! In fact I have submitted grabs of that very spot here.

There were a few instances where I felt I wanted to hear some kind of score although for the most part, the natural ambience worked perfectly. Just a thought.

The acting is great; serious. Well done and beliavable.

I did notice some kind of motion studder and am trippin on that :-/

This is one of the first things submitted that actually feels like a real movie. This was cool.

The images in the start are disturbing and its hard to believe that is a US territory ??? >:(

Re: Indie feature shot on DVX100!!!

that's the feeling i got when watching the trailers as well as the 2 clips. makes me want to see more! i emailed neill and he will be sending me a cd as well. i'm afraid watching 15 minutes of it will grasp me even more?! :D

Re: Indie feature shot on DVX100!!!

Hey guys, thanks again for the comments. You all don't know how much it means to get constructive criticism. It really helps in driving me to fine tune our film.

Anyway, I just posted up a new "Trailer A". Can I get some thoughts and opinions? Better or worse than the original trailer a? Again, apologies for the huge file as I've yet to learn how to compress these suckers. If anyone can help me with that, can you drop me a line via email or AOL AIM?

Re: Indie feature shot on DVX100!!!

Hey, Neill, you have talent dude. Just finished watching the 15 min. (mrjynx@mail.com) And it is great. John has already posted much of what I was going to say, but one thing, I personally would change, the music in the scene where your main character gets the phone call. I would put a lower sounding music, to p;ace it more "on the edge". All of your handheld shots were great, they really got the feel of how chaotic some of the areas can be (baggage claim). I can't wait to see the whole thing. What do you have in mind for the movie now, any festivals?

Oh yeah, Neill, you wouldn't believe how much poon I'm getting now. ;) Thanks.

Re: Indie feature shot on DVX100!!!

Excellent, the best I've seen on this site!

The panning around the guy was interesting, and added to the sense of bewilderment he was experiencing...

...Just read the production notes. Great story, aahh, but it appears good independent film-making requires dedication!

Right on, balls to the wall get your passport, camera, tapes and go. good idea to get out of overshot california. the daytime exteriors have a lot of energy. reminded me of el mariachi and traffic.

anyways don't look back life is short. sometimes those nagging dreams are really your destiny.
