Indiana Jones 4

After having seen the movie I've allowed myself to read some others reviews, and the things I have picked up on are #1, the movie is too unrealistic... have you seen Raiders lately? A lost ark with magical powers? Come on... how realistic is that?

Couldn't be more wrong. The ideas behind Indiana Jones have always been outlandish, it's the EXECUTION here that is lousy. Raiders was mostly shot on location in real settings, with real actors doing real things, which made the fantasy more real. Same with Temple of Doom for the most part, and Last Crusade. This LOOKED phony, with too much of the action undercut by CGI or green screen work, which robs the scenes of suspense. On top of that certain stunts went too far outside the realm of plausibility, like surviving a Nuclear blast inside a fridge tossed miles into the air with atomic force. But this really isn't my main complaint. The script is just bad. The dialogue stinks. There are too many character relationships that don't go anywhere, and which are handled with the subtlety of a sitcom. The stakes are unclear. In Raiders, Indy is going after the ark to keep it out of the hands of the Nazis, who will use its powers to rule the world. In Temple of Doom, he is after the Sankara stones to save the village and free the enslaved children. In Last Crusade, he is trying to get the holy grail before the Nazis do. This is all established by the end of the first act. In this one, he is going after the Crystal skull why exactly? There is no over-arching mission here, its just little mini-missions that keep changing without much urgency. Around mid-way, we learn that the Russians want it for mind control purposes but that threat is never made palpable. Then he has to return it to the temple because it told him to, which is a purely mechanical reason to keep the story moving. And then there's too much EXPOSITION. There is 1 expository scene detailing the history of the ark and where it might be in Raiders, that's it, after that it's off to the races. Here we get scene after scene of tension sapping jibberish. It's like Spielberg thought he had to compete with The DaVinci code and National Treasure. And then the discovery of the object is handled without any mystery. Watch the scene in Raiders where Indy enters the map room and locates the well of the souls. It's wordless, and pure magic. Or when Indy and Sallah finally find the Ark. Here it's like, "Hey what's behind here.", and they pull out the skull with all the majesty of someone finding their lost car keys...Sorry, it just stinks. I'm dying to read Frank Darabont's draft now to see the script Lucas rejected.

Spielberg has been a god to me for as long as I can remember.

Yesterday, for the first time, he let me down. Broke my heart is more like it.

Lucas is a cancer that spreads like so much CGI wildfire (or ants, monkeys and prairie dogs as the case may be.) It is obvious to me that Steven (my idol) has sadly been infected by Lucasimia.

Godfather III is no longer the poster child for derailing a great epic series. Indy 4 is (dare I say it) Highlander sequel territory.

I hate to admit it, but at some points, Ford just came off as distant, boring, grizzled.

***SPOILER SPOILER****************************

Also, the idea that this ultimate badass becomes some old family man at the end didn't bode well either. I like my indy as a dark loner, through and through.

************************************************

To the people who complain about people complaining of the unrealism, stop.

Yes, the indy movies had unrealism, but that doesn't give this movie the right to be over-the-top looney toones. Guys, you can be half-naked in the pool wearing trunks and be appropriate, you can be also half-naked wearing a speedo and be grossly inappropriate. It's all about where you cross the line in that realm.

When are people going to get the idea that CGI is becoming a hinderance and not a helper? Shame on you Mr. Spielberg for putting Indy in the same world as some off the shelf looking

***SPOILER*** CGI alien. ***

In other words old..yea i agree.

I wont accept this as a true sequel. Acting was wooden. The dialog seemd over rehearsed, and whatever happened to that organic realism that the previous three had? Oh i know... Spielburg and Lucas happened thats what. They whooped the hell out of it with their cg BOOM STICK!!! Any magic that remained in the series was layed to rest by corporate Hollywood. The true title for this movie should be, " Indiana Jones and the Crusade to Make a Quick Buck"... I is pissed!

I really wish everyone would calm down about this. I mean, if Lucas is great at one thing, it's going back and fixing his films. He can always fix it later

LOL...The only saving grace here is that the Indiana Jones movies are stand alone adventures. I don't need to watch this film if I don't want to.

This guy has a pretty funny review:

A few years ago, Spielberg was cleaning out his garage when he came across two things — one was an old but still valid cashier's check for $80,000,000, and the other was a milk crate full of volumes from Time/Life's Mysteries of the Unknown series.

SPOILERS in the review:

And it's a testament to how good Spielberg used to be that these kids can make something pretty compelling just by copying his shots out exactly:

TRUE STORY

I went out to lunch with my brother this afternoon. We were chatting previously via email and I told him my opinion of the movie. Well, we sit down and the first thing he says to me in a loud and boisterous manner is... "So... Indy sucked, eh!"

The people sitting at the table behind him immediately turn to us and say...
"No kidding! What a letdown!"

It seems that a lot of people really dislike this movie.

I think it's funny that I'm the one usually hating on movies in this forum and I had one of the more positive experiences of the bunch. It may have something to do with expectation, which it seems that the people who hated it had wayyyyyyyy too much of. I learned my lesson with the prequels. Expectation is the death of a good film experiences.

p.s. I think they should cut a special movie with the Jar-Jar battle fight scenes from the end of Ep 1, the terradactyl/bat (sp) transport of adrian brody in king kong, and the shia lebouf tarzan scene from Indy 4. It could be wonderful.

I was really let down. I thought it was simply okay. Not good, not great, not terrible...just okay.

Laughable at some parts - Getting hit by a blastwave in a fridge and being okay? The attack of the monkeys?

Cinema takes another 8 dollars from me and left me feeling used.

This just in- In response to the heated criticism of the latest Indiana Jones film, the veteran film maker had this to say;
"I may be the worst Pira... Director you have ever heard of, but at least you have heard of me..."

I haven't even seen it yet and knew it would suck in advance. : /
