Wow, almost exact copies of Zacuto designs.

I think its OK to copy other peoples hard work and sell it off as yours. I hope to steal a lot of other peoples films from the dvxuser community and present them as my own.:cheesy:

Joking aside I think we are just as responsible if we pay manufacturers who benefit from peoples work by stealing.:Drogar-Mark-08(DBG)

Chrosziel Studio Follow-Focus = $ 3,699.95 - and that's w/o the other purchase of the wheel.

The Indian one is ~$730 after shipping and that's w/ a whip + 19mm adapter + both wheels...

This is not a Zacuto Rip Off. Their arm adjustment is purple and not red....Completely different. SEE HOW DIFFERENT THESE ARE!!!!

I can see why you would think it's a knock-off. However, defending no one in particular, how far do you have to change something to not get called a thief? Take the flipping device for example. There is a definite prism used inside these things which has a shape to it. Stick that inside a casing and you have a bunch of flipping devices that all resemble one another...how much different can you get them right? I have even heard some folks say that the SGPro is a knockoff of the Redrock. But really, adapters can only be so different from one another.

Just my $0.02

both look like rip offs on the noga arm.. or any basic dial indicator arm.

I think the idea is more in the line of not duplicating the technology (Like M2 vs another spinning glass adaptor or noga vs. zacuto) but more in the line that any company taking another companies product, putting a pair of calipers on it and reverse engineering it right down to it's smallest detail.

This process helps the thief piggyback off "brand name recognition" provided by the originator company.

For example, anybody can make a sports shoe but if I duplicate Air Jordan right down to its smallest detail and call the brand "Mikey" I am using the BNR and reputation of Nike to sell my product.

Aside from being illegal, it is unethical. Unfortunately it is very difficult to enforce copyright laws internationally so most companies do not have the resources to pursue such offenders.

The real responsibility falls on our shoulders not to purchase cheap knock offs, stolen from other companies.

In the end if we put the companies who design these product out of business there wont be any indie equipment to buy.

I think I've seen a thread similar to this somewhere in this forum. Personally I care more about the quality of the product. If it does the same job and similar quality for half the price, I go for it. If the quality is crap, I would not spend a penny on it. I've found that out the hard way.

My two cents.

I bought one of their matteboxes (the Vocas Knockoff). The metal was a cross between aluminum and play dough. Never seen such soft low quality metal on a film product. The stress of everyday use made it unuseable. It couldn't align flat to the lens. I could bend it into many shapes though.

That being said, Phil Bloom swears by their shoulder mount in terms of price, performance and quality.

My guess is they outsource to different companies for different gear, hence the variable quality (mostly this side of crap).

If the follow focus really works well and good enough for pro use, I'd be amazed.

Anyone willing to give it a shot. I would if they had a return policy.

I see what you are saying and I do agree somewhat. The thing is(in the case of the indicator arm), when a company takes an existing and easily accessible product , does a little mod like swap in a red knob and changes thread size, and then offers it at an extremely high price point, it isn't too hard for another company to do the same thing but undercut their price. The competitive marketplace will take advatage of such things.

Also, doesn't this little item look familiar?

now I'm hoping zacuto just rebranded this petroff and not blatantly ripped them off.. but there hasn't been any open info abou this.

I talked to a guy from Zacuto about their FF. If I remember it right, they have an exclusive contract to buy the basic FF unit from petroff and modify it for the american market...

that's cool, I really like the petroff ff. Pretty solid and the ability to swap gear to either side is such and awesome feature. I also like zacutos improvement to the mount.
