Incrimination - Large Scale Student Action Flick

Hey Everyone,

It's been a while since I last posted here but there has been a reason for that. Basically, for the past few months, I've been in the post-production stage of my latest short film, Incrimination – An intriguing student short film that features many professional 'Hollywood' production elements such as a cast/crew of over 70 people, police cars in an authentic bus lot, and even a real SWAT team.

I shot this last June 2007, but the laptop I was using to edit the movie got stolen with the only copy of the film; forcing me to re-edit everything from scratch and are thus only releasing it now. This was shot on a HVX with SG Pro (Matt Garrett as DP!), 2 XL2s and 1 DVX with a budget of $700-$800. The synopsis is as follows:

Having long worked on a case for the past year, Detective John Larsen arrives at the scene of a mysterious crime. Dozens of dead bodies litter the ground in what appears to be a violent massacre of a group of cops & organized criminals working together. Despite being advised against going in by his boss & coworkers, he goes in anyway. Teaming up with a gorgeous female Federal Agent, the pair work together and comb the crime scene in a bid to unravel a crime that could very possibly entail an intricately fatal puzzle of corruption, intrigue, and betrayal at the highest levels of the police force. A high-octane, fast paced action-thriller shot at the independent movie level, Incrimination is a film filled with spectacular gunfights, intriguing character development, & countless plot twists and turns that will keep any audience riveted to their seats.

The trailer is available here (I have no idea why it's so interlacy on youtube!):

The trailer is still a rough cut in that it hasn't been color corrected to the final product, and uses the 'ALIAS' font which we changed later - More importantly, there's a heavy emphasis on the guns just to attract the typical college kid. The real film has much more substance, I assure you.

On behalf of the club, we would also like to extend a warm invitation to all DVX User.com members in California and beyond to join us at the gala premiere at the University of California, Riverside, on Thursday, the 31st of January 2008 at 8:30 PM. VIP tickets also available to those who RSVP fast.

More information is also available HERE and HERE:

Everything about the trailer looked good except the muzzle flashes. They seemed too sharp and crisp, try using a composite mode of ADD with a slight blur on it to make it more realistic

This looks very professional, Brian. The trailer show pretty much everything done well - acting, story points, shooting style, look, editing...very nice.

I'd love to see this in its complete form, and I'd come to the screening in a heartbeat, but I'm all the way over on the right coast. Please tell me how I might get a good look at it when you're done. Gonna make some DVDs? HD-DVD or Blu-Ray even better...

Nice work!

Very nice, looks like a huge production. As stated above, take a second pass over your muzzle flashes, they basically ruin all of the hardwork that you have put into the film. If you cant get them to look right, it would definitly be worth it to pay for a compositor. This seemed to be the only weak point of the production from what I can see in your trailer. Once you get it finished, are you going to stream it? I would love to see it!

How many times to they bring to bear? It's almost comical.

Also you got a lot of the classic "actor with a gun" shots,.. it looks like they're watering the flowers.

I have a vendetta against indie "trench coat and sunglasses" movies, so sorry if I'm being an ass. I just see it all as overdone and campy now. You did a much better job than most though.

Kudos and the production scale though, that's tight.

Dewy did kind of hit on what I thought too. Especially the female lead.. looks like a pilates class is missing an instructor or something.

But very true on the scale and how you pulled it off. Very tight looking and nice pacing. Just did kind of look a bit stilted in terms of dialogue stuff there and just how framed and stages the poses look... Still that said, impressive for the budget and that you are in filmschool...

Heh Justyn, he's not in film school. He's taking a different course at the university...

Hey everyone,

Thanks ever so much for your comments. They've been really constructive and helpful, I really do appreciate it. Keep em' coming!

Gonna make some DVDs?

Sure thing man. Definitely will (:

the sound is good, is that adr or

Haha newp it's all from the set. Ironically enough... We shot next to an airport on the day of a huge Californian fire so we had horrible sound. We tried to salvage it but ah well.

I will definitely improve this. Thanks for the comments. We're working on it right now. Thanks.

Dewy, while I appreciate and take no offense at your comments, I ask only that you critique my artwork based on it's merits rather than it's type. The fact that you dislike the genre is perfectly acceptable, even understandable to me, but certain people such as myself do like it and ask that you respect that. For instance, I for one hate rap/hip hop, but I don't go around condemning people who listen to it just because of my own personal preferences.

I know I overused the guns/shootout scenes, but bear in mind that I'm catering to a college audience. That scene is just one scene in the entire movie, but I overplayed it quite a bit just to please a specific target audience. Afterall, the viewer comes first, right? =P

Not pissed or anything, just giving my stance. Hope you understand. Feel free to rebuttal haha.

Hey BLT, brother in arms.. I see you're not far from reaching your goal in life... starting your own triad organization.

From the trailer, I feel that I'm gonna enjoy some good acting from your lead casts and be entertained by fire fights. - As usual eh!!

So will it be release for everyone to watch after the screening?

Dave

Great cinematography, production values, cast, sound, location, directing, acting.
Pity about the plot though. There's about two dozen TV shows daily with this exact type of content, so many I stopped watching it years ago. Yes there is demand for it, and yes you could make lots of money off it, but it still shows a tremendous lack of imagination and originality. Plus I think there's too much violence in the real world as it is.
