Increase Noise Filter?

Hi,

There's a scene in this movie I'm doing that is from the POV of a crappy camera. I was wondering if there was a filter I could use, or certain settings I could adjust, to increase the noise in the picture and make the image look much cheaper and poorer. Any ideas?

There are a lot of things you can do. For one, you can export it as a crappier file format, then reimport it. To add grain, you can use... get this... the add grain filter in AE. If you don't have AE, then you can make a series of 10 stills in photoshop that are neutral grey, then go filter/add noise... make it gaussian and monochromatic. And vary each one slightly. Import these stills as an image sequence (of course, you can do more than 10, but I find that ten do the trick!) and overlay them over your footage, try a multiply or overlay.

You can also blur the image slightly, mess with the colors to lower the lattitude, making the blacks milky and/or blasting out whites.

The sky is the limit when you want to make something crappier!

My two cents, though... avoid using Magic Bullet film damage plugins and stuff, unless you are really careful... they are being overused now and are easy to spot.

Pretty much every NLE has a "noise" filter you can drop onto your footage. This is something done very easily in post.

absolutely.

one thing not as easily done in posit is make 24p look like 60i
if its a cheap camera effect use 60i for those parts.

if you are gungho on in camera noise you shou turn your gain full on.

also maybe under expose and bring the gamma up in post as this will add noise.

But best would be shoot on a single chip cheapo cam/add noise/tweak in post
