incorrect capture settings

Hi,
Our dp shot in 24p (standard, not advanced), 4:3 anamorphic. I had someone capture the footage in Final Cut Pro, but they captured it as 3:2 rather than 4:3.

The clips look "squished" -- but when I change how I'm viewing a clip (i.e. check the "anamorphic" box) -- it displays nicely on the canvas --

Here's my question -- will I run into problems down the road if I don't re-capture the footage as 4:3?

3:2 is correct because the resolution for the dvx is 720x480 and if you know simple math 720:480 will reduce down to 3:2. 4:3 is just sd resolution that you would get for instance on your tv, which is 640x480. Now as for looking squished it shouldnt unless he shot in squeeze mode.

thanks -- I exported it -- burned dvd, and here is what happens -- on my widescreen HD tv, the clip fills the frame (the dimensions are right, nothing looks "squished" -- and no black bars at the top or sides). On my regular tv, everything looks okay -- black bars top and bottom to create the "widescreen" look.
My concern now is that the image on the HD tv is really pixelly and there are some artifacts. I realize I am playing SD on an HD screen, but I think it looks more pixelly than it should -- also there are some artifacts (which I don't see on the computer monitor).
I am going to try exporting again, checking the settings, and burn another DVD.

Thanks for your help!

ElmRealmRider,
I get the math, but I'm confused because the DP said he shot "in 4:3 anamorphic." So, like, is there a button on the camera that allows him to shoot in 4:3 even though the resolution on a DVX, as you say, is 720x480? I mean, if he shot in 4:3 (if that is possible) and then treating it as 3:2, does that create a problem?

I talked to someone else who said that ALL DV is 3:2 720x480, so it doesn't matter if it is captured at 4:3 or 3:2. Sorry for my ignorance -- just trying to understand.

I don't think he shot in squeeze mode -- he said "anamorphic" I think squeeze mode and anamorphic are different settings on the camera, but maybe I'm wrong about that.

sorry i didnt read your first post correctly if he shot "anamorphic" i can only guess he shot squeeze mode cause theres only letterbox and squeeze (a and b models). The way the dvd turned out, being able to fill the screen correctly on the hd tv and bringing in black bars on your standard def, sounds like he shot squeeze. Essentially squeeze mode makes the image 16:9, letterbox leaves it 4:3 but gives it black bars.
