Incorporating Various Formats

Hello Gals & Guys -

Just got my first DVX 100B (P) and am loving it!

Question:
I'm traveling to Buenos Aires to film a friend's concert in a theater. I have no budget, so I'd like to have various friends there bring camcorders and have everyone film the concert.

Now, when I take those tapes -- mini DV PAL, mini DV NTSC, Hi8 PAL -- will I be able to convert them all to create a 24p production?

Will my DVX 100B (NTSC) be able to "read" a mini DV tape (PAL) in order to download it to my computer?

Any of your observations would be appreciated. Many thanks!

Steve B.

ps - I think this forum is awesome!

No it won't. You'll need a Pal camcorder(or a capturing deck capble of doing PAL) to capture it...

Volcano, many thanks for answering that! :furious3:

Now, if anybody can tell me about combining various formats into one final film... (I do own a PAL Hi-8 device)

The PAL footage could probably be imported directly into a 24p timeline without any issues. It will be a couple percent slower but shouldn't be noticeable. The other thing to be aware of is the PAL image will be 20% larger than the NTSC image so maybe the PAL shooter should leave larger safety margins. Color matching might also be interesting using different cameras but also because of the way the color is captured (PAL DV is 4:2:0 and NTSC DV is 4:1:1). You will still need a PAL deck to import from a PAL tape.

As for Hi8, I couldn't say for sure but I think that would require a capture device.

A thousand and one "thanks" for your knowledgeable reply Ian! I think you've convinced me that I must shoot the concert in one format only. (Also, because I'm brand new to the world of the DVX 100.)

Varying picture sizes, color issues, and different speeds could make musical concert footage difficult to edit successfully into a final film.

Again, thanks for you post!
