Incandescent Bulbs banned in Canada, stock up now!

Wow I didn't even know that. Can anyone suggest a clean LED or CFL alternative to replacing practicals? Will these energy saving bulbs have horrible flicker if dimmed?

Its just a matter of time before traditional bulbs are phased out completely so lets talk about any new choices.

CREE LED bulbs are fairly impressive replacements for standard 40/60w household bulbs... At least a darned sight better than any other hardware store LED I've tried.

Just say no to CFLs.

I discovered the reason behind similar legislation that came in to force in the UK a while back. It seems that at one time Peak Load in the UK was about 80% of max capacity... it started climbing to over 90% with theoretical Peak load being 110% in a couple of year time. So if all the incandescent bulbs e.g. 60W and 100 W are replaced with 5W and 10 W energy saving fluorescent bulbs or the new even more efficient LED lights and CRT Televisions are replaced with LCD flat screens, and fridges, washing machines etc are all now far more energy efficient we are not going to get blackouts.

I have not had an incandescent bulb in the house or office for a few years now. Long before the UK ban on them.

As a side effect it is all "greener" and we are saving the dolphins etc. so all the politicians are now saints. :-) Who mentioned mercury?

If 95% of the general population swap to low energy lighting the remaining 5% of specialist lights are not going to make that much difference. Especially as they are not on 90% of the time. Though I note that for photographic and video use tungsten is giving way to fluorescent and now to LED anyway.

Agreed. I'm slowly switching the house to those. I love them.

I just bought a lot of 100 100 watt frosted bulbs just to have around. I like them in practicals, in Home Depot clamp work lights as supplemental light for back ground splash and 4 socket "Covered Wagon" Lights. I like the warmth of them. I can't stand consumer CFLS and will check out some of those CREE LED lights.

Rough Service Incandescent Bulbs 75W, 100W will still be available in Canada and US :

Exemptions to the standards have been identified where an alternative for an efficient bulb is not available, including oven lights, decorative lamps (light bulbs), appliance bulbs, three-way fixtures, chandeliers and rough service/utility bulbs, as well as for agriculture and industrial applications where lighting is used to keep animals or equipment warm.

Here in the northeast, the sun sets early and there are many like myself that feel that the day is almost done when darkness appears. i start feeling tired, lazy and just don't want to continue working much later than 6PM. In the summer months, I can go full speed till 8PM. It was, from what I imagined, a result of seasonal affective disorder that gets me feeling that way due to shorter days. 2 years ago, I did a small test. I work almost 90% in my basement shop where there are 4 small windows that light enters from. On each window, I wired in 10, 6000K daylight leds around the frame and covered the window with white thin curtains. I am sure I could have done this with flos instead. During the first week I worked, I turned on the leds while the sun was still shining at around 11AM so I would not have to remember to turn them on later. I took out the wall clock as well as my watch. I worked without any symptoms of tiredness, laziness etc. to well past 9 PM. I was fooled into subconsciously believing that it was still daylight. This was also effective on overcast rainy days. I was thinking that perhaps leds can be used as such and gradually dim and change to a warmer hue to orange as the day progresses. An artificial sunset, so to speak. I see possibilities here.
