Here's a short we just finished for a contest here in the Dallas area:

In No Hurry

We received a theme and then had 8 days to finish the short. The theme was "Know Thyself". The film festival is known as EDOC, or Eight Days of Creation.

We shot it on a DVX-100A and edited it in Final Cut Pro with some Magic Bullet CC.

Would love to hear your thoughts.

Thanks,
Russell

I really enjoyed that. I liked how it was cut together, and how all the characters were brought together in the grocery. The acting was pretty good. The sound was clear, the CC was not over the top, just enough to make it look nice. Great job.

I really liked how that was put together. I liked how the pacing built up throughout the short. I would have liked it more if the initial pacing was a little faster... I was on the verge of "if this doesn't pick up, I'll skip it" but by the end it built to a nice little crescendo. Good job!

That was excellent; great job and totally true.

The editing is tight and total eye candy. The payoff works. The coloring is nice and not over the the top as we see with most MB CC jobs. I loved it. The talent was first rate.

And the brunette was smoking. (Just an observation)

Nice stuff. Some great lighting and transitions. Not exactly sure why you did a color switch at the end. It also could have been a little shorter. Overall a great short video. Good job!

I think it should be shortened. All the VO was getting very tiresome and I had to force myself to keep watching it to get to the end, and then the end was not as climactic as I had hoped. I think shortening it quite a bit would solve these problems, at least in my opinion.

Nice work.

Fun stuff. Brunette was very hot and nice to see you put it together so quickly and have it come out the way it did.

BTW, I know how to do split screen in FCP, but how do you make the images move in and out of frame? Is there an effect to use to make them scroll in from the left/right/top/bottom? And did you just size the frames as needed?

All that movement of frames kept it very interesting. Great job editing the thing. :)

Very nice. You made great use of composing for the screen, keeping the eye moving around and entertained. Great editing, very clear dialog, a real plus, and good looking colors. My only gripe, is like others it gets a little long in the middle, especially with the older gentleman. I also had a good sense of what was coming at the end, before it happended, and I think if you sped it up a little bit, it might catch people off guard at the end (in a good way). Good work.

great flic!

nice concept...kept me clued in to figure out what would happen at the end.

The only critique I would say is..some of the scenes were a little small...hard to see, but otherwise it's great!

Thanks everyone for taking the time to share your thoughts on the short. The pacing was one of the hardest things to tweak for this piece. We tried a variety of ways, but it was difficult with only a few days to edit.

ktfilms: I did everything in FCP. Since all of the masks were sqaure, I simply used the Crop feature to mask the images. Then, I keyframed the Center position to move them around. There's even a nice Ease and Ease Out feature that gave the movements a smoother look. We tried to shoot each shot with the sizes in mind, but we did Scale some of them to make them more consistent.

Thanks again everyone! The festival premiere was two nights ago, and we didn't place. But, the older lady (Susan) was nominated for best actress.
