ok, mabey I am doing something wrong here:

record 720P to 4 gig p2 card, switch to MCR and file will playback.

then record 1080, switch to MCR. 720 will not playback(clip is red) only 1080 clip will PB

Am I missing something here or do you have to record the same format to every p2 card and can't mix the formats on a single card?

You can mix the formats freely, but for some reason that I don't quite understand, you can't play back formats other than what the camera is currently set to.

Which makes no sense, so let me say it this way: assume you had clips of every format on the card. And in camera mode, you set the REC FORMAT to 480i/60i. Then when you toggle to MCR mode, all the clips that were 480i/60i are now playable, and every clip that *isn't* 480i/60i will not be playable.

So if you want to play your 720/60p clips, you have to toggle back to camera mode, change the REC FORMAT to 720/60p, and then toggle back to MCR mode. Now all your 720/60p clips will be playable.

It doesn't make a lot of sense to me, and I lobbied hard for them to change it, but in the end I resolved that it really doesn't make much of a difference in a regular production. Normally you won't be swapping modes all over the place during any given production, normally you'll stick with one mode for almost everything (maybe 1080/24p for dramatic narrative, with an occasional overcranked 720 clip in there). So usually everything on the card will be one format, and in that case there's not much to worry about.

I found it a bit irritating when doing my testing, but then I realized that it's really only during testing where it should ever be an issue.

even reset the camera to no avail. it looks like a MCR SW bug?

if I record a 720 clip then a 1080, the MCR shows the 720 clip as bad, even though the transfer back to a computer shows both clips as fine.

the P2 system info ver is 1.03-00-0.00

you are right Barry. I've been chasing my tail on this all afternoon. Panasonic should put this in the manual. (at least I can't find it anywhere)

Personally, I plan to mix formats and here is why:

if I master a production at 720 I can shoot interviews (talking heads) at 1080 and drop them into a 720 timeline. The larger frame size will allow me to scale and position the interviews if needed.

the MCR shows the 720 clip as bad
The "red" number doesn't mean a clip is "bad"; it means it can't be played back with the current camera settings. It's not a bug, it is described in the manual, somewhere. I like to think I clarified it significantly in the new book.

When a clip is "bad" there'll be an icon of an "X" on it, which means you need to go in and repair the clip. I've only had that happen when I've ejected the card that the camera was currently writing to (which is a no-no, of course, just like ejecting the tape during recording would be bad). But the "repair clip" function worked just fine on those occasions.

As for mixing formats, yes that's totally do-able. It's a fairly quick process, and once you have the menu-button-shuffle-dance down, it doesn't take any time at all to hop back over and change the format. I don't understand why we need to do that, but right now we have to live with it.

"the new book"???

After owning an HVX for a whole 5 days I have come to the conclusion that the MOST critical add-on anyone could possibly purchase for an HVX would be "the new book"!!! Any word on when it might be available? I'd like to mark my calendar and start counting down the days!!!
