In Light & Shadow

Asking you all to check out my (rushed) cinematography on this short film, "In Light & Shadow."

This was shot for an Advanced Lighting project here at Full Sail on Arri 16mm. It is about an aspiring cinematographer, whos mentor is Janusz Kaminski (Stephen Speilbergs DP) and the struggles pertaining to that. We shot this in 3 days, on soundstages, and our backlot. Comments are welcome.

It is definately tasteful crap :).

I liked it- you did a good job visually emphasizing the content of the story- keep it up. :)

Thanks, Ryan. I checked out your reel, good material. What compression did you use for exporting it for web? I just can't seem to get mine to an acceptable quality level, my titles are always jagged and soft, and anything that looks good is always huge in file size.

The lights are IMO very nice. I only miss the 35mm depth of field. But this is personal because i'm sick... and i need that d.o.f everywhere...

Understandable. I appreciate the comments. I think we got the most out of the 16mm DOF we could, though I think its only apparent in the CU's and the rack focus between the actors at the beginning.

Thanks, much appreciated. :)

I used compressor to export my file. I'm still figuring out the optimal settings, as I haven't found anything that I'm satisfied with - especially in terms of text. Here is what i am currently using:

H.264
Audio: AAC Stereo 48.kHz
640x272
Crop T: 88 B:88
Multipass On
Spatial Quality: 75
Min Spacial Quality: 25
Key Frame Interval: 150
Temporal Quality: 50
Min Temp Qual: 25
Average data rate: 1.405 Mbps

isin't it insanley expensive though....and when you get out you owe a ton of money, hopefully you will get a good job, to pay it all back

Its like any other school, it costs money. The major misconception of the school is that it costs an outrageous amount...Yes, it is expensive, but it's school. For its caliber, it is one of the cheapest film schools in the country. UCLA, NYU, USC, etc all hit around the $100,000 mark, Full Sail, on the other hand, comes in around $65,000.

Haha. Yeah, this was an advanced lighting project, not really a film. In this piece, we used students from our class. On an actual school production, say 16 or 35mm their are huge casting calls where hundreds of actors show up from different agencies and places around Florida.

I'm interested to know what Full Sail offers for a specialisation/major in cinematography, especially with 35mm. I would like to know how many years is the degree programme, how many film productions you have per semester and if the school grants a certain amount to your film budget for final year productions.

Thanks
