FS7: In case you're considering a Zoom F4 to go with your camera

VERY interesting findings Ben, thanks v. much for taking the time to share them. One sound guy I use has recently gone for the F4, and we were experiencing some bizarre symptoms a while back, which we never fully disentangled (I just manually-synced and replaced the offending line-level camera recordings from his .wav masters - just long IV takes so not too much of a PITA). This definitely clarifies things a lot, and as a result I'm also now considering a Tentacle!

On a side note, given the visual-orientation of this board, I first read your post as referring to an F4 zoom (lens), and was bewildered when I saw the waveform image! ;-)

Cheers,

jason

Oh yes. Good point. Also relevant to us FS7 users -the radio hop I'm referring to is actually the Sony UWP-D11 package and, if you use the hotshoe mount, gives you the 2 channels from the F4 on channels 3 and 4 of the FS7.

Ben.

Appreciate the evaluation of the Zoom F4. And I as well was thinking lens aperture F4 since on a different thread we were discussing any issues with the F4 aperture on the 18-110 ;)

My SD MixPreD is worth every penny. SD proves that you get what you pay for.

Just out of interest, what do you gain using this instead of going direct into the two native inputs? Looked over the spec and can't see anything hugely different, so perhaps it's just the (no doubt) super HQ preamps. I find those in the FS7 pretty damned clean though, so wondered if there was something I'm missing!

Cheers,

Curious how you have that set up? I have the UWP-D11 system as well, how do you have it connected on the mixer end? Sorry for the potential n00b question

I use a 3.5 to 3.5 cable (one comes with the kit) out of the F4 sub outs and into the Sony radio Mic TX, set on line in. FS7 has the receiver on the hotshoe, using channels 3 and 4.

That is a pretty solid way to add 2 XLR synced inputs. I've looked into a couple different options (the 2-channel Sony receiver you have and the XLR-K1/2), but I'm curious if anyone has found a good way to attach a small high quality XLR recorder to their camera? There is a Roland 6 channel recorder that's pretty small (about the size of the Tascam DR-100 III). While it would require a sync in post, an extra 6 channels could come in handy in some situations.

Mix Pre has not only great preamps, but also really smooth limiters, and effective low frequency roll-offs. It's a real pleasure to use when doing OMB interviews/shoots. If running around I normally wear it in small bag (with a couple receivers) and can easily reach down and adjust volume when needed - without needing to take my eye away from the camera. When doing sit-down interviews I also use the 'Tape Out' connector to feed a PCM-M10 recorder for transcription files.
