hi guys, this might be a stupid question but i'll ask it any way. i've heard so much about in camera tricks, what are they and how do you achieve them?. examples would do..

In Confessions of a Dangerous Mind (George Clooney, Charlie Kaufman) for example, when Chuck is in the bathroom and has an idea for a game show, the camera zooms in on his eyes while he is talking and as it zooms out we find him in a boardroom proposing the idea to a bunch of execs.

This effect was achieved "in-camera" i.e. there were no special effects used in order to create the shot. Instead the crew used rotating sets and complicated lighting setups (not to mention great acting from Sam Rockwell) in order to accomplish the shot.

Similarly in one of the telephone conversations that Chuck has where a swing-away set was used in order to portray the telephone conversation, as opposed to say, using a split screen effect or the like.

There are many other examples of in-camera effects. Michel Gondry is an excellent source of these, especially in Eternal Sunshine (check out the dir. commentary on the DVD where he explains how he achieved various shots).
