In Camera Old Video Playback Issue

Today I finally took the plunge and hacked my GH1. Following are the setting that I used and I'm very happy with the result except of one issue. Every time I play old videos (the ones that I made before hacked firmware) camera either crashes or shows "This Motion Image Cannot Be Played". Videos taken after the firmware patch works fine. Both videos were taking at FDH mode.

Following are the settings that I'm using

  • Version Compare Checked
  • Native 24p
  • Video Bitrate Adjustment FHD/SH Simplified (32000000)
  • Video Bitrate Adjustment H (16000000)
  • Video Bitrate Adjustment (16000000)
  • Overall Bitrate Adjustment (34000000)
  • Limiting Bitrate Adjustment (60000000)
What am I doing wrong ?

maybe you are doing nothing wrong and maybe it is as simple as new firmware does not recognise old footage anymore? try unchecking native 24p, cause old files were 24p in 60i.

are you playing from an old SD card or are you just copying clips and file structre to a card?

Same for me

Same for me

I have this issue. Its annoying. I just put it down to the fact that the new firmware wouldn't recognise the old files.

Although sometimes this happens when you don't format the card correctly and delete the .mts files directly from the card.

turn your camera off. check to see if your firmware is 0.0. format your card inside the camera. then load the patch.

That's exactly what I did. I used a clean camera formatted card to load the firmware and then put the SD card with the footage in and it still has the same issue.

Since I can see all the files via Windows Explorer, I know that they are there but camera with hacked firmware only recognizes new videos and not the pre-hack vidoes.

I'm playing it from an old SD card that I was using before I updated the firmware.

try to load the file into fcp via log and transfer. If you get a read error then the files are ghosting. Other than than I would download the files and format the card.

I formatted the card and took some more videos and now I'm seeing the same issue with new videos as well. Some of them work perfectly while while others give error. All videos taken with "C" setting on pTool and native 24p.

I still cannot figure out while some videos play in camera while some throw an error.

could be that some may not play back because they are peaking at the higher end of the bitrate? I have read the gh1 will not play back if bitrate of the clip is over 32-36.

The same thing happened to me. After the hack I put an SD card with some old files shot 24p with the wrapper and they wouldn't play. What I shot new played perfect. So guess what I did? I used plain common sense and figured out that because the configuration was changed to 24PN and the bitrate to 32 logic said the old ones where not being recognized. And I did a very simple thing. Dumped the old files into the computer, reformatted the card and kept shooting. A logic is so helpful.

That's for MJPEG files. There is no such issue for AVCHD files.

Question to OP: why do you need to playback "old" files in camera? Why not simply move them to computer?

I can also confirm this behavior. I am shooting AVCHD 25p FHD and camera freeze in playback mode, when browsing to an older file made with the original firmware. Deleting the older files using the computer or card reader solves the problem. As you shoot more with patched firmware, you can scroll back in preview mode between the 25p clips. Camera freeze only when attempting to preview/play the old firmware clips. So it will be a good idea to free the card of older clips or better still format the card once the firmware is patched and start afresh.

There is no problem previewing AVCHD files with bitrates up to 42.8, which is the highest I have got so far.
