In camera audio

In the hands of an experienced sound guy, how much of a difference would the audio quality be if recorded in camera as opposed to an external recorder?

Depends on the camera, but generally recording to something like a Sound Devices 788T or other high-end recorder is going to trump the camera's internal audio circuitry.

Did you have a specific camera in mind?

I have a panasonic hmc40 and a dedicated sound guy for my shoot. He said he's able to record externally, but I'm just wondering how much it's really worth it for a dialogue driven comedy.

Hm. As I have not used the HMC-40, and I don't know the quality of the XLR box firsthand, I really can't give you a fair assessment.

If you have any doubts or concerns, go double-system. And honestly, since a doubled recording system can record to both camera and external recorder at the same time, you get the best of both worlds.

Oops - I thought you meant the HV40 from Canon. The HMC40 looks pretty cool. I'd go with what your sound guy is comfortable with.

Thanks for the quick replies. I'm terrified to have bad audio. If there is a triple system of audio and I could afford it, I'd do it.

If the sound turns out terrific on this, I'll throw a parade for the sound guys and shower them in rose petals.

I may even do a fundraiser show to raise money for professional audio post. : )

Well, if your sound guy is worth his salt, he'll take great care to calibrate the recording levels, will be monitoring the audio directly from the device which is recording the audio, and will catch (and fix) any problems on the spot.

There is - sort of - a triple system (though, it's more complex than that). On major features, audio is typically recorded to an external stereo recorder. It is also recorded to a multi-track recorder where each mic is sent to its own discreet track. This allows the dialog editor to go back to the isolated mics. Some record to laptop, some to solid-state recorders.

If the sound turns out terrific on this, I'll throw a parade for the sound guys and shower them in rose petals.

This sounds almost as if you'll be surprised to get clean audio. You should have more faith in your sound crew... lack of trust can spoil the mood on set/location. And if you can't trust your sound crew, find a crew that you can trust.
