In Bruges

Mark Harris

Pain in the ass
I didn't find a thread for it.

The trailer makes it look kind of dumb actually. But McDonagh is truly a great writer, and the cast is completely first rate. So I am pretty excited to see his first feature.

It's got very limited release at the Angelika and Lincoln Center here. Anyone else seen it?

The trailer, in my opinion, looked pretty awful.

However, I've read a couple good reviews for it that definitely make me more interested in seeing it.

Wouldn't be surprised if it was just a victim of poor marketing.

I can't f-ing wait! I saw Pillowman on Broadway a couple of years ago with Billy Crudup and Jeff Goldblum and it was Amazing. His short, Six Shooter, which one an oscar a couple years ago, is one of the top 10 most downloaded short films right now. And this has got to be one of the coolest accolades ever: At the age of 27 he was the first playwright since Shakespeare to have four plays running simultaneously in London's West-End.

I agree, the trailer made the movie look absolutely awful. Terrible TERRIBLE trailer. I hate when trailers take lines that are probably funny in the movie and, in trying to make them fit into that perfect "trailer timing", somehow make them unfunny. This trailer was full of those moments. And Colin Farrel's track record doesn't inspire much confident. But one of my friends said the movie was good. So maybe I'll rent it. I just won't be renting it on HD-DVD. :(

First great film of 2008. I can barely wait to see it again.

The film is very plot dependent so the trailer can't give too much away.
Write off the trailer but don't miss the film!

oh yeah! I remember I thought something was wrong with the theatre sound. Why in the world would you include swearing that would be silenced out in a trailer? Especially when people are swearing 5-10 times in a row?? So weird.

Just saw this.

The first truly awful film of the year. Gah, even Cloverfield wasn't THIS bad. Lame dialog, no plot, self-indulgent acting. McDonough's an okay playwright (though he's quite overrated) but his film totally sucked. I actually own Six Shooter, though I've not seen it. Not really looking forward to it after this mess.

Oh, and how did RALPH FIENNES act in this catastrophe?

Good thing I only spent four bucks...

this movie blows...i want my money back....all $4. they could've done a lot more with this cast and budget. IMO the worse thing about the movie was the writing, cinematography and the concept. the acting was fine.

seems like the first 45 mins, especially the lame comedy, could've been cut out and would not have affected the plot.

I enjoyed the movie, I thought it was an interesting take on the hitman angle. And I think it works.

I was a little scared about the over usage of the midget, but when it comes around in the end, its justified. And I think the comedy works here, and for on rare occasion, Colin Farrell.

And I don't think the story needed a bigger budget. That would of only ruined this story. And for first time director, Martin McDonagh, he had everything he need and more. In an interview (I'm sure he has made this known multiple places) he mentioned cutting 40 mins from the final film that didn't flow with what the story was and had become at the editing stage.

Nonetheless I think it was a great first effort for the writer/director!

i dont recall anyone saying the movie needed a bigger budget.

the midget thing was okay to me. probably the most humorous was the midget's jokes and how his character was developed.

he mentioned cutting 40 mins from the final film that didn't flow with what the story was and had become at the editing stage

a lot of the dialogue in the first hour felt like that.

overall the film felt like something i see online using the same resources as most indie filmmakers without a budget can do.

i don't think it was horrible, but don't think it was all that good either and i lost interest pretty quick. i didn't laugh at all as it felt like the story didn't know what genre it wanted to be.

i dont see this film getting any buzz beyond imdb users and forums like this.

I enjoyed it. Definitely a British film with British humour and quirky plotting. Like the Bruge location as well -- my favourite city in that part of Europe.
