I just went through film making boot camp!!!
I entered a Midnight Madness contest this weekend and this is what we made.
At 12am friday night they give you a theme that you have to use and you have to write, shoot, edit your film within 24 hours. EVERYTHING has to be created in this time, no stock footage or music from a friends band.
We got ours in at 11:57pm Whew! It was a mad house, this guy was running down the street with his laptop on his arm open and a drive in his other hand rendering I guess. Cars were blowing the stop sign to get there. It was crazy.

This one is a little cleaner than the submitted version. I had to clean up the audio a lot due to static in the line somehow before I showed to you guys. This was an experience and a half, learned a hell of a lot doing this and suggest it for everyone.
If we come in top 10 it gets screened at the museum of art this saturday.

The theme was "Bad Advice"
Enjoy::

Thanks TEAM:PUFFIN!!

I was about half sure that was going to break into full on porno territory

Nice work. The apartment looked great, and the people in it were very odd.

One question: was there a little glow effect on there? It seems like I notice a glow on half of the DVX shorts I watch, but I'm never sure if it's an effect, filter, or just the way the video turned out.

Yeah this one had a slight glow to give it an odd ghostly feel. It also helps separate the faces from the background.
I just looked at it on the LCD here at work and it looks really dark... I hate that..

Props to Team Puffin

Props to Team Puffin

I produced our 24-hr Brooklyn Midnight Run film for Puffin Films (and co-edited, with Aram, and wrote it, with TeamPuffin, and costumed it and did craft services and... Hey, how many people can you get to work on a 24-hour production?). While everyone is listed in the credits, I wanted to give props to our team, because they really went above and beyond in dealing with a crazy shoot on a crazy schedule: Our cast members, JoJo, Ken, Tom and Steph (the latter two also came up with the story/concept) and our crew, William on makeup (having a professional makep person made a huge difference), Adina and Adam for on-set photography and video (see the production pics above), and Dale, sound and grip.

Also, a huge debt of gratitude to "the Gentlemen of the Buffet Flat" for allowing us to cavort through ther phenomenal Brooklyn loft all night long. I don't think our film really did justrice to how incredible, and incredibly unique, this place is -- it's living art, and we wanted it to be a character in the movie or at least a strong influential presence. Not sure if we really pulled that off, but I hope maybe they'll be generous enough to let me take another crack at it sometime: Thank you Steven, Michael, Tony, Jimi, Bruno and Manny.

And of course, last but not least, thanks to Lincoln the dog.

Nice one. The woman reminded me of Selma Hayek which is definitely a good thing.
I liked the minimal lighting and the macabre feel to it.
Good luck!

Yeah, Leslie really put it all together for us. I was like hey, lets do this 24 hour thing and the next thing I know I get this 3 page document with the schedule layed out. Shes great like that and its hard to find someone with the dedication she puts in every project. I think our team did a kick ass job for our first 24 hour thing and next year will be better and hopefully we can have the same team. There was 2 times i thought the 2 leads were really arguing and I had gone up to them and said something like hey, whats the problem why are you guys fighting? They looked at me and were like, what? we are practicing our fight scene...I stood there with a dumb look on my face I bet...
Yeah they really worked that weirdness in there, I forget how they explained the 2 movies it was supposed to mimic but Im sure she will help me out on this.

Our first award...

Our first award...

Well, we just found out that even though we didn't make the Top 10 films that were screened at the Brooklyn Museum of Art, we did, in fact, win our first award: Lincoln the Dog took the trophy for Best Animal Actor! Of course, Steve, Lincoln's owner, aptly asked: "Was he the only animal actor in any of the films?" We don't know the answer to that, but as Aram said, it's our first award, and you have to start somewhere.

Here's a photo of our award-winning animal actor, Lincoln the Dog, at home in the Buffet Flat:

That is one cool apartment. It really looked great, and helped the piece alot! IT looked really good. I liked the dark look to it, and from my monitor it did not look too dark at all. The story was nice, and had a good twist in the end. Good job guys!

Thank you asylum. Im hoping we can shoot something less time constrained there one day, that was only a small area of the place. The apartment is like 4 times the size it looks in this and every room looks different. Its like a 12 location place in one.

Yeha the first thing i thougt was , porno. hahaha

Wait, it was a porno. Softcore with a murder.... so is this like a snuff film? O_o

Or did I miss something?

This is what being an "INDEPENDENT FILMMAKER" is all about. Freedom! Solid work for 24 hours, good job LOB. Strange, but in a way we all like...need more close-up shots. I dig this short.

Thanks guys. Now that you mention close ups, I think your right. There is only like one in there besides the art work close ups. FREEDOM!!!
I dont think you missed anything. Couple having problems > man suggests swinging > wife doesnt want to > they go meet swingers > wife gets drunk and loosens up > husband has second thoughts and wants to leave > wife kills husband by accident but reveals that she may have been thinking about it before > Da end.

Thanks, everyone. We ended up describing this short, on our submission sheet to the Midnight Run folks, as "Rocky Horror Picture Show meets Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?" I don't think that was our intention starting out, but those are the references we began using on-set as we hammered things out. So, in that spirit, the characters became Frank and Madge (a la Rocky Horror) and George and Martha (a la Virginia Woolf). By the time the very long night was over (and a very long day was beginning), we came up with the title George & Martha, Frank & Madge as a play on Bob & Carol, Ted & Alice, the 70s film about two middle-class couples who decide to "swing." We figured, well we ripped -- I mean, paid homage to -- two other films for the content, we may as well do the same for the title...

Congrats on your sweep of awards.
I lit that with a few practicals and you can see some of them in the frame along with a punch from a 400w fresnel to give the light spots using a cut out board to cast light only on the faces.
