FS7: Impulz LUTs and FS7 error: File Access NG

Hi everyone!

I've just upgraded my FS7 to firmware v2.0 in hopes that I could finally successfully import the Impulz/Osiris LUTs via SD Card for monitoring on the VF.

Unfortunately, I continue to get the dreaded "File Access NG" when selecting the LUT from the SDHC card.

- I've got the proper folder structure (PRIVATE - SONY - PRO - CAMERA - PMWF55_F5) on the SDHC card.
- I copied the files over on PC so there are none of the residual files created by the Mac copy process.

Has anyone who has encountered this problem been able to load these properly? Or do these simply not work in-camera?

Thanks and have a great day!
Will

The Impulz LUTs as downloaded are 64x64x64 cubes...

Only really serious hardware can use and modify footage to a cube that size.

You need to bring the one you want to use in camera into Resolve (Lite works fine). Apply it to a piece of footage. And then right click on the thumbnail in the timeline (not in a node!), and then "Export as 3D LUT".

This will convert it into the 33x33x33 that the camera needs. Then you can put it in the correct folder on an SD card and the camera will use it.

BTW, the _FC versions of the Impulz package seem to work best.

If you really feel the need to make some adjustments to the Impulz _FC versions, always make sure you A/B your custom LUT against LC709 in Resolve, so you avoid any exposure changes in your custom LUT.

Fantastic, thanks a ton, Nate. Had not thought of needing to convert it (and couldn't find it anywhere). Works perfectly.

Good call on the A/B for version control. I'll be testing a bit today. Can't thank you enough!

I did the conversion but there's still some posterization. Is that to be expected on a 17^3 capable monitor?

Is there another way? I don't use resolve. I want to have a bunch of LUTs loaded in my FS7 so I can see how they look once out filming. Bringing them all into resolve sounds tedious. Thanks a lot!

Lut Calc... great tool

A great tool for what? Can I alter an existing .cube file? Can I make it 33x33x33 cubes like Nate Weaver suggested? I just downloaded LUT Calc and it's pretty confusing as first glance and I don't see anywhere to my Impulz LUTs. Thanks.

Hi Mario,

on the bottom left of LUTCalc is a box marked 'LUT Analyst'. Choose your LUT file to convert here. Once you have selected a file, the box should change to show several buttons and boxes, starting 'LUT Title' then going through input gamma and gamut. In this case your LUT is designed for the Sony and S-Log3/S-Gamut3.cine, so you can leave everything at the default (unless the LUTs are designed for S-Log2/S-Gamut), though you might want to set the 'LUT Title' box to something specific to you.

Now click 'Analyse', and if you are on the current version (v2.4) you should see 'Out Gamma' and 'Out Gamut' further up on the left set to your LUT Title. On the right, at the bottom you should see the contrast curve or gamma of your LUT. Click 'preview' and you get a look at the look of your LUT.

To make a conversion, choose 'Camera / Monitor LUT (MLUT)', make sure that 'Sony User 3D MLUT (.cube)' is selected then click 'Generate LUT'.

If you play around with any of the customisations, you can change the title for your output LUT in the box on the top right. There is a fair bit of scope for playing. You can also mix and match the colour (gamut) and contrast (gamma) elements of your look.

All the options are explained in the instructions - just click 'Instructions' in the box with the charts, and for the basic use there are a couple of introduction videos at lutcalc.net.

Hope that helps a bit,

Ben

Ahhh Mario ... you are in good hands now. And thank you Ben for jumping in and responding... your response was so much thorough than mine would have been.
