Hello

Here is the situation

I been shooting a project with a Red One at 4K. I dont have a Mac Pro, I have an Imac. A friend with a Mac pro transfer the 4K clips to prores 422 (HQ) so I can edit with FC and Imac and later export an EDL and get 4K files.

Righ now I just want to edit a teaser . Can I do this with my Imac? I mean, Can I import the 4 K clips over the editing for the teaser I am doing with the proress, I am talking about very few seconds of about 30 Clips. Can I manage that with Imac? I dont have a budget now to take an EDL and do this in a editing roon

best regards

This friend told me it was going to be inpossible to handle red clips with an imac. If I can do that , it would be great. Can i use an EDL to import? 4k transfer is proress 444 right?

There is no reason you couldn't transfer/transcode the RED footage on your iMac.
Maybe it'll be slower to do compared to a beefy Mac Pro, but chances are... you mac will be perfectly fine handeling those clips.
As long as its relatively new (I think most any iMac within the last 2-3 years should be fine... i5-i7 core macs are best), A decent amount of RAM (8 gigs or more), and a fast editing hard drive with sufficient space (FW800, Thunderbolt, internal...).
I think you can even strip raid 2 USB drives and get pretty good speeds.

Anyhow, you should be fine editing a trailer on your iMac.
By the way, maybe you want to edit a Proxy Prores, then when your done relink and export at HQ.

any intel imac with minimum specs should be enough to edit proress files, that's the beauty of final cut.

I wouldn't bother with 4K unless it's intended for digital projection in 4K. Ask for 1080p or 2K ProRes files and your life will be much easier. And yes you could process the files directly yourself but if the friend is offering to make you ProRes- I'd suggest taking the offer as it's a lot of work and render time...

Thanks, what would be the process then? I have now finish the editing in low res proress . I been told I have to export an edl and then import the original red files
