importing P2 using HVX/FireWire

This is probably a dumb question, but I'm not an HVX owner yet and I'm trying to learn everything I can before I buy it. I edit with a mac pro desktop with FCP. Would I be able to transfer the files from the P2 cards to my computer using the HVX through FireWire? I read that there are no slots in a mac pro for P2 cards.

I'm not sure if you can transfer them over firewire, since I've never done that before (I'm trying not to over-use the 4-pin firewire port on the camera). You can, for sure, transfer via the USB interface from the camera without a dedicated card reader.

Yes you can offload P2 cards via Firewire on a Mac, you don't need a card reader. USB connections are not supported on the Mac.

You probably don't have to worry about the firewire port on the camera, unless you plan on moving the camera around while there is a cable plugged in to it. This is more of an issue with people using the Firestore instead of P2 cards. I am one of those users, and have been extremely careful with my FW port and have had some occasions where the cable becomes loose and I've lost frames.

Keep in mind, this shouldn't be an issue for you as you offload the footage on the camera.

THoff -- thank you for clarifying that USB doesn't work on a Mac (I had no idea). I usually use the duel adapter on a macbook pro, but had assumed that USB worked both on Windows and Mac.

Nope.

With a Mac I would be extra-cautious when connecting things, since they have powered (6-pin) Firewire ports. Make sure you use a good Firewire cable so you minimize the risk of shorting the data and power pins.
