Importing P2 in Final Cut with the New Imac

Leopard works for me on a Macbook Pro

I think it's probably more of an issue with the firewire hardware in the iMac, although I'm not sure how you would test this. If it were a Leopard issue, wouldn't you have problems not matter what the hardware? I'm using Leopard on a Macbook Pro and I can import fine from P2 on my HVX.

I have a mac pro quad. I'm having the exact same problem with my new HVX200.

It won't mount on the desktop.

I've downloaded new drivers, but no luck. I also tried playing out from the HVX in standard def DV mode, just to see if I could capture video that way. It didn't work, which to me indicates that the firewire port is not working at all!

Going to test this at work on an older machine...

hey when you connected via usb, did you make any changes to the settings? I tried connecting, and when i press and hold the dub button, it says connect on the camera lcd, but the p2 drives do not appear on the desktop, nor does it appear when i go in final cut to capture.

thanks
sabesan

Hi sabesan,
no i did'nt make any changes. Only set the device to USB instead of Firewire.
Both Apple and panasonic are not responding to my answers. My HVX is still unusable under firewire conection with my iMac.

When going through USB on the imac, slide the record-protect switch ON on the P2 cards, otherwise they won't be recognized.

Hey Guys, i have found the solution. I bought a FireWire HUB and connect the hvx 200 camera to the hub and connected the hub to the computer. And the camera mounts prefectly and iam able to import flawlessly. So the simple solution is buying a firewire hub. It costs about $40 at an apple store.

Hope it helps.

Yes! sabesan! You're right... i did the same (connected the HVX to my external firewire disk through a free FW400 port, the HD acts like an HUB) and it rocks!!!!

Strange.

I usually don't recommend connecting to a hub, but for some reason it works.

Hi,
i guess the problem lays on the incompatibility between iMac's firewire controller and HVX200. Using an hub is a way to bypass that problem, because tha hub has its own controller... :nads:

I want say once more tha neither Apple nor Panasonic have made anything to solve that problem. :kali:

My tech details:
I have a fully functioning firewire 6 pin port on the back of my 20" iMac which I bought fall of last year when they came out. I know the firewire is functioning because I just went through an extensive multi-week process with apple support trying to figure out why my camera and my 500G external WD hard drive does not show up (all of my 1TB WD externals are fine). So I have just erased and re-installed my OS to start new. I am now running OS X 10.4.11 with all the latest P2 drivers installed and P2CMS.

My step by step:
I connect the firewire to both the computer and hvx200, then power up the camera. Once I get it through the MCR into DUB mode via holding the button for a prolonged period of time (a few minutes) I get nothing. I do get the camera blinking "1394 CONNECT" throughout all this, but nothing ever shows up on the desktop, P2CMS or Disk Utility. However once I power off the camera, I get this showing up in my Disk Utility.

Not sure what this means but maybe this will help explain where the issue is occuring between the iMac port, hvx200 and p2 cards. I think it is something with this specific iMac and it's firewire port recognition with all external devices.

I am buying a firewire hub tomorrow and will let everyone know if this also solves my problem... any hub selection pointers?

Well the Belkin 6 port firewire hub i bought works great with the HVX200 and P2 cards show up no problem. My 500G WD external still will not show. I think the drive, though only a few months old, is failing. Luckily I backed up all that data a long ways back... so sounds like this is definitely a problem with the iMac's firewire 6pin ability to recognize external devices

Any one know how to get a class action suite started?

Definitely, the iMac FW controller has some serious problems. If you take a look at my previous posts you know i've got similar problems. I solved using the FW port on the back of my LaCie external HD (that acts like an HUB).
Strange that the WD HD is still unable to mount on the iMac.
Have you tried to connect the HD to another Mac?

I am wondering what you imac users would recommend to buy to use with the hvx. I just bought the camera and currently have a 17 powerbook. I would prefer not to use the powerbook for logging shots. I have heard so much negative about the macbook pro gen2 and am not looking for a mac pro. What are your suggestions?

The all new macbook pro but if you need the 17" you have to wait a month or more...
If you don't need a laptob, buy a macpro...

Just wanted to reiterate the same problem and solution worked here:

Connecting HVX200 via Firewire 400 or 800 to iMac 2008 model, P2 card won't show in desktop.

Daisy-chaining it through my Elephant Drive via Firewire 400, it connects just fine.
